In December, we celebrated our founder Nneka Allen, CFRE, COC, PCCas she received the Fabulous Female Fundraisers Madam CJ Walker Legacy Award for her brave leadership and work in the philanthropic sector. So many beautiful tributes were paid to all the award recipients, Ashley Day Gibbs, Jay Ell Alexander, and Danielle L. Sydnor. During the event, Marisa DeSalles shared a poem she wrote for the occasion, “A Love Letter to Change Makers.” It opened with… I am a walking, talking revolutionary dream. I am unfettered imagination, run rampant. I am heartbreak withstood, adversity understood, I am a complete rejection of what is for the sake of what was. I am a warm embrace of what is yet to be. I am beautiful futures yet undreamed, I am the picture of the perfect community, a dream held aloft for so long by so many. I am a changemaker. We believe in these politically fraught times we need more changemakers! We all have the potential to make change, but many don’t accept the challenge. Black people have a long history of fighting for change and in Nneka’s keynote for the F3 Madam CJ Walker Awards she demonstrated the power, love and justice found in the Black philanthropic tradition.
