New Publication Alert: Affective Experiences of U.S. School Personnel During a Year of Crisis ??? ? A recent large-scale study, first authored by former Yale Child Study Center postgraduate and mentee of Dr. Christina Cipriano Miranda Wood, offers a powerful look into the emotional landscape of more than 8,000 school personnel during the year 2021. Educators, support staff, and administrators reflected on their well-being in the face of a global pandemic, political polarization, and educational upheaval.? ? ?? Key Takeaways:? Sociopolitical Impact: Stressors varied by political context, with those in Republican-voting states more impacted by COVID-related concerns, while personnel in Democrat-voting states faced issues like uncertainty and tech challenges.? - Racial Disparities: Black and African American staff reported COVID-19 as their biggest stressor, highlighting significant racial differences in how stress was experienced.? - Sources of Joy: Despite the challenges, students were consistently a source of joy, with coworker relationships also playing a key role in emotional resilience.? - Need for SEL: Social-emotional learning (SEL) support for school personnel is crucial - especially as the emotional well-being of educators directly affects their ability to support students.?? This study provides critical insights into the intersection of emotional well-being and the broader sociopolitical landscape. As we look toward a new school year, integrating SEL into professional development programs is more important than ever.?? ?? 关于我们
We believe that the future of equitable and inclusive education can be realized through collaborative research partnerships and innovative research practices that advance the science of learning and social and emotional development. The mission of the Education Collaboratory at Yale is to advance the science of learning and social and emotional development. Through intentional collaboration with students, educators, leaders, and organizations, we investigate, inspire, and address open questions in the Who, What, and How of inclusive and equitable SEL. Our approach emphasizes community partnerships and collaborative engagements with schools and communities, designed to balance rigor, relevance, and reality in SEL design, implementation, and evaluations to support all students, schools, and communities, to benefit. Under the direction of Dr. Christina Cipriano, the Education Collaboratory at Yale is leading the national discourse to evolve the definition of SEL alongside the burgeoning field; identifying promising practices for inclusive and equitable implementation and evaluation of SEL in school settings, undertaking critical evidence synthesis, and supporting the next generation of data practices through novel SEL assessments and community-based approaches to intervention science.

Educators shape the future generation of learners and leaders. ?? ?Tomorrow, October 5th, is World Teachers' Day, which serves as a reminder to honor the invaluable contributions of teachers around the globe each and every day.?One evidence-based way we can honor educators is to support their physical, social, and emotional well-being. Recent research from the Education Collaboratory, led by Dr. Almut Zieher, highlights that mindfulness training—specifically dialectical behavior therapy (DBT)—can significantly mitigate burnout and promote positive emotional states in aspiring educators. Through eight weekly sessions, pre-service teachers learned DBT skills, leading to increased mindfulness and elevated positive affect. Importantly, these skills helped them navigate challenges and better support their future students. The findings emphasize the need for ongoing training and structured support, paving the way for improved teacher preparation programs. As the world turns to celebrate teachers this week, we invite you to commit to investing in the social and emotional health and well-being of educators year-round.?Join us in advocating for systemic change to ensure all educators are valued and supported to thrive!! ??
