What a beautiful conversation I had with members of the Dementia Action Alliance (DAA). I wanted to share some of my takeaways in a video I recorded immediately after finishing my call with the group. Thank you to Janice Bays for inviting me, and a special note of appreciation to Julie, Laurie, and Monica for helping me with this impactful opportunity to hear YOUR perspectives. ?? “With, not for.” When asked what they envision for themselves, they shared their wishes. ? I want to be with my family. ? I want a backup if/when my family’s needs don’t make it possible for them to take care of me. ? I want to be treated like a whole person. ? I want to be out in the country. Don’t stick me in a city in a building. ? Freedom. Friends to come whenever they want. ? To see trees everyday. Be near nature. Their wishes ranged widely (of course they did) but one thing was RESOUNDINGLY CLEAR… “I don’t want to live in ANY of the assisted living and memory care facilities I’ve seen or been to.” With.
