Founded in 1969, the Ecology Center is a nonprofit organization, located in Berkeley, California, that focuses on the environmental impacts of urban residents. We address issues through educating, creating community momentum, building infrastructure to make change easy, and spreading positive solutions through convening and advocacy. Our core issues include waste and consumerism, food and farming, climate change prevention and resiliency, and sustainable living. Our mission is to inspire and build a sustainable, healthy, and just future for the East Bay, California, and beyond. We transform the ideals of sustainability into everyday practice. We deliver information you can act on, infrastructure you can count on, and leadership for lasting change. AB 2236, the Plastic Bag Ban bill, has passed the Senate and heads to the Govenor's desk for signing. This is big news for curbing plastic pollution in our state. The bill replicates some of Berkeley's plastic bag 2.0 strategy, which passed in 2023. More proof that our collective local action can scale up to have a greater impact. https://lnkd.in/gmrDuN6X

The 4th Session of the UN Environmental Program negotiations on a Global Plastics Treaty is happening this week. The final details of the treaty will impact our world for decades to come, for better or worse. Plastic pollution starts at the wellhead not the garbage can. The US must push for High Ambition in the #INC4 plastic treaty negotiations and push back against efforts other oil producing countries to water down standards and derail the process.
#INC4 is underway! As mission-based, zero waste recyclers, we call on the U.S. delegation to lead the demand for a strong & effective treaty that addresses the full lifecycle of plastics and prioritizes a significant reduction in plastic production. Martin Bourque, AMBR’s steering committee member and executive director of Ecology Center, Berkeley, is attending INC-4, and closely following negotiations and the drafting of the treaty text to advocate for the inclusion of authentic recycling principles and to ensure recycling isn’t appointed an inauthentic off-ramp for rampant plant production. We're on a mission to make a real impact, and we need your expertise, energy, and vision to help us achieve our goals. As a member of the BIPOC Working Group, you'll play a pivotal role in supporting the Alliance's efforts to provide essential support for farmers' market industry leaders interested in integrating JEDI systems and values into their markets’ operations.
