The Doorways provides lodging and support for patients and their loved ones seeking medical treatment in RVA.

关于我们

Since 1983, The Doorways has generously provided temporary lodging and support for patients and their loved ones who need to be close to the hospital but not far from the feeling of “home.” Through generous donations, our independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization has become one of the largest hospitality houses in the country with 117 private rooms that allows us to provide heartfelt care that’s unavailable in our guests’ communities. Our guests are embraced 365 days per year in a healing, emotionally supportive environment where they can enjoy peace of mind.

We were honored to be selected for Serve Virginia’s MLK Day of Service Mini Grants along with so many other wonderful organizations! The welcome bags were a heartwarming gift that reminded our guests that, thanks to the community surrounding them, they’re never alone in facing medical challenges. Our community extends beyond these four walls and city limits thanks to organizations like Serve Virginia. Thank you!

Earlier this year, 13 organizations across Virginia were selected to receive MLK Day of Service Mini Grants from the Virginia Service Foundation to support community service projects with volunteers. These projects ranged from hands-on efforts building garden beds for youth and coordinated projects prepping snacks, meals, and period kits for neighbors in need, to hosting events centered on community-building, creative self-expression, and literacy, among other community-focused undertakings. We are so impressed with these brilliant strategic advertising students from Virginia Commonwealth University! They went above and beyond to truly understand our mission and find new ways for us to connect with our supporters. Thank you Kaitlyn Ley, Emily Vliet, and Haley Gregg for making an impact on our community through your talents!

First Campaign Sprint In The Books ? Recently, I got the chance to work with Emily Vliet and Haley Gregg on a campaign for The Doorways. With just a few weeks to come up with three creative executions, an impactful strategy, and conduct research for the company, the outcome was something I'm beyond proud of! Here's a summary of what we came up with: ?? ?? We wanted The Doorways to no longer be one of Richmond’s best-kept secrets and needed a strategy that could create meaningful connections with younger audiences. ?? ?? We decided to target 25-40-year-old women who understand the value of a supportive village and welcoming safe space when things in their lives get hard. ?? ?? The Insight: Young women share the common struggle of doing it alone and understand the need to be surrounded by those who care. ?? ?? Our Strategy: We want to?inspire?these young women who understand the importance of surrounding themselves with support to take time to?be a part of the nurturing village,?The Doorways. We then created a series of Instagram posts that would inspire women to volunteer and an engaging community event activation that would help bring in more volunteers, while still being on brand for The Doorways (you can check it out below ??) Thank you again to The Doorways for trusting us and thank you to my team for being so amazing!

  • We’ve got one of our favorite SAVOR throwbacks for #FlashbackFriday! Chefs Sunny Baweja, Travis Milton, and Ian Boden recreated a moment of camaraderie from 8 (!!!) years ago when they previously teamed up to make magic happen at SAVOR. We think a three-peat is destined! Our SAVOR chefs live our mantra - it’s their joy in life to improve the lives of others… by sharing their talents through their incredible food. Thanks to Chef Bob James for capturing these special memories! #MantraMonths

  • This St. Patrick’s Day, we are feeling especially lucky to have volunteers like the “Sizzling Sisters” who share the same passion for our mission: We believe that it’s our joy in life to improve the lives of others. Whether it’s through making meals together like these sweet friends, or serving our guests through countless other volunteer projects, our volunteers have hearts of gold. #MantraMonths

“We believe in generosity.
We believe in the simple truth that everyone needs help eventually.
We believe that it's our joy in life to improve the lives of others.
We believe in the human spirit, the oh-yes-I-will determination that trumps any get-well-soon card.
We believe in being there until we're not needed instead of leaving when we get tired.
We are absolutely certain that we can love people we don't know.
We regret that we have only one life to spend in the service of others.
We believe life is meant to be shared
We refuse to turn anyone away.
We are continually impressed by the people of Richmond.
We think Southern hospitality is a universal life skill, not a regional curiosity.
And when there's nothing more we can do, We'll Do More. Give More. Love More.
We are The Doorways: Between Healing and Home.” The line “we believe that it’s our joy in life to improve the lives of others” is emphasized
  • It’s been a week since SAVOR 2025 and we’re still in awe of the community that made this unprecedented success possible in support of our mission! With sell-out numbers, exceeding fundraising goals by raising more than $300,000, and providing guests with an extraordinary culinary experience in the extraordinary HeloAir, Inc., it was a first-class flight the entire night!

  • Partners in vision. In 1983, our founders envisioned a place where no patient would face medical crises alone. That vision became The Doorways - and thanks to community members like you, it’s still thriving today. Partners in crisis. When Richmond’s water crisis struck, our community came together to ensure guests had safe drinking water. Your support helps us respond to emergencies with compassion and care. By making a gift, you become a lifeline for our guests. Thank you for partnering with us. To give: thedoorways.org/give

Every night, families facing medical hardship find rest, relief, and a supportive community at The Doorways. Your generosity makes this possible. We value your support for The Doorways and for our guests for whom we provide a home away from home. Thank you.”
  • Our mantra resonates deeply with people in a variety of situations. Take it from someone who never stayed at The Doorways, but has been intrinsically involved through marketing and volunteering to support our mission. Thank you, Amanda Serfozo!

    ??? Owner + Head of Content @ FOZO (ex- Capital One) | ?? ICF-ACC @ Int'l Coaching Studies (May '25) | Coach @ UX Content Collective | ?? Host of “Agendaless” (Spotify) | Trauma Advocate | ?? A human first draft.

In late 2017, I moved to Richmond with nothing but hope and a trunk full of tchotchkes. Two weeks later, I landed my first client: The Doorways. I wrote a mission and vision not knowing that manifesto and those words would be splashed on every door, wall, webpage, local TV, and piece of marketing material over five years later. ??? Fast forward to early 2021. My Dad was diagnosed with Stage IV stomach cancer back home in Atlanta. I came to live both the nightmare — and the very mission I ended up writing about. The thing I needed most at the end of those surreal 12 hour days was a bed away from hospital waiting rooms…dinner…a comforting word…a place that felt like home amid the displacement…kindness…someone to tell me it would be okay…a shower…the very basics. I had no idea what the granular impact looked like when I first wrote these words, but I came to understand firsthand. I’m so thankful I could join my YPC crew these past few years in Richmond, in even the smallest of ways. Beyond UX, beyond deliverables, OKRs, and profits, this is by far my proudest work. This organization is truly everything I believe in: hospitality, reassurance, people showing up for people at the lowest of lows. For me, it’s the fullest of circles and was no doubt part of my reason for landing in Richmond when I did. Thank you for opening a door for me, and so many others!
