Our new boy, Zeb. He is 17 years old, Mammoth donkey. Zeb is 16 hands tall. He is a wonderful addition to the herd. Zeb was donated to The Donkeys of the Heart by a wonderful lady. You wonder what is a Mammoth Donkey? Mammoth Donkeys is a breed of North America, descended from large European donkeys imported around 1785. Make Them Carry Their Saddle A father of one student and I were talking last week and he said that he wanted his daughter to ride more and not have to do the work part of the catching, grooming, and saddling. I smiled as I explained. ?? Riding donkeys are a combination of strength, timing, and balance. Kids in this country are physically weak (unless they are actively involved with physical conditioning 4+ times a week.) ?? When they walk out to the field, it's clearing the stress from being under fluorescent lights all day. ?? Feeling the sun soak into the bones. ?? As their bodies moves on uneven surfaces, it strengthens legs and core. ?? When they groom their donkey (especially currying), they are toning arms and stabilizing core. ?? When they carry their saddle, arms, chest, and back are doing isolated strengthening work. ?? Being near donkeys, calms and makes them tune into the splendor of these empathetic animals. ?? When they ride at a posting trot, it’s equivalent to a slow jog calorie burn wise. ?? After a lesson, the students are physically tired and mentally quiet and balanced. ?? Donkeys feel your heartbeat and mirror your emotions back. ?? Riding large animals makes them resilient and pushes their expectations. Working with donkeys is so much more than learning how to ride. The students at The Donkeys of the Heart carry their saddles.
