Today, Veterans Day, we honor those who have served our country. The Dole Institute will be open for special hours today from 1:00-4:00 for visitors to visit our museum and our Kansas veterans virtual memory wall.

The mission of the Dole Institute of Politics is to promote political and civic participation as well as civil discourse in a bi-partisan, balanced manner. By providing a forum for discussion of political and economic issues, fostering public service leadership and encouraging participation in the political process, we emphasize that politics is an honorable profession and that only through political and civic participation can citizens redirect the course of our nation. While the objective is to accomplish this mission on a broad scale, our location at the University of Kansas provides a unique opportunity for outreach to young people and students. We utilize the three distinct components of the Dole Institute to accomplish this mission: unique displays that tell the compelling story of Bob Dole’s life in the context of Kansas and The Greatest Generation; one of the largest congressional archives in existence which houses all of the Senator’s congressional papers; and finally, the vigorous public programming conducted by the Dole Institute.

Last week, the Dole Institute honored Sandra Day O’Connor, former Supreme Court Justice and founder of the nonprofit educational organization iCivics, with the 2024 Dole Leadership Prize—a bipartisan award presented to an individual or nonprofit whose public service leadership demonstrates the importance of and inspires others to be engaged in political and civic affairs. Scott O’Connor, the late justice’s eldest son, joined Dole Institute Director Audrey Coleman for a discussion on her life and legacy. Afterward, they were joined by iCivics CEO Louise Dubé for the official presentation of the award, which included a $25,000 prize for iCivics. Today, we remember the thousands of individuals who perished on September 11, 2001. Their lives—and the countless others who have sacrificed their lives in the years following the attack—will never be forgotten. We’re proud to house a permanent memorial in the Hansen Gallery, which features two beams from World Trade Center Tower One. The beams were gifted to Senator Bob Dole and President Bill Clinton for establishing the Families of Freedom Scholarship Fund, which helped fund the education of children of 9/11 victims. They were later installed here at the Dole Institute before its dedication in 2003. The Dole Institute will be open today, Sept. 11, from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. for guests wishing to view our memorial and pay tribute to those we have lost. As part of our partnership with fellow congressional archives to develop the American Congress Digital Archives Portal, we recently launched Dole Collections Online—a new online platform for accessing our archival content in a detailed way. This new platform is perfect for students and seasoned researchers alike, and offers new accessibility features that make researching our collections possible for all researchers. To mark the occasion, Dole Institute Assistant Archivist for Digital Initiatives Marla Weaver answered some of the most important questions about what this new resource is and how it will elevate researching our collections.
