Congratulations to Curtis Stephens, QRD?, a board member of Carter Bankshares, Inc., who authored an article in Directors & Boards Magazine on Resilience in the Boardroom, part of their What Directors Are Thinking series. "It is crucial for boards to be resilient to minimize impulsive decisions and increase the opportunity to capture significant upside gains amid uncertainty in a rapidly changing environment. The challenge we face as directors is to respond and adapt to emerging issues that impact our company. We must recognize that while expectations for board risk oversight continue to grow, so does the board's role in resilience. Boards must be proficient and be able to adapt, navigate and recover from disruptions that occur. Companies will face many challenges that test the resilience of corporate values, strategies, operations and enterprise risk management frameworks. Boards can improve their companies' resilience by having appropriate systems, processes, succession plans and governance frameworks in place." Why Boards and Risk Managers Speak Different Languages: Hear what Board Members Really Want to Know About Risk. This will be a discussion among Yvonne Stillhart, QRD?, Board Member and Audit Committee Chair at multiple organizations, Eric Mai, QRD?, Head of Enterprise Risk Management for Delta Air Lines, and our moderator, Alex Sidorenko, Group Head of Risk, Insurance and Internal Audit at Serra Verde Group and founder of Risk Academy and Risk Awareness Week. The meeting will focus on addressing key challenges in board-level risk governance and the Board – Chief Risk Officer Relationship. Board members and risk managers don’t always speak the same language. How do risk management leaders frame their valuable knowledge and data so that they can most effectively be used in board oversight and strategic planning – both of which are key fiduciary duties? Is risk data presented in a way that feels deterministic and overly certain? Are risk leaders consistent in their methods of risk identification for board use during decision-making? How are the intuitive recollections of past experiences by board members leading to an overemphasis on familiar risks while potentially critical ones are neglected? Do board members overvalue heat maps, and should risk managers stop using them? What about risk appetite statements, arrows that point up, down, or sideways, and other “standard” tools? This meeting will explore more sophisticated and integrated approaches to elevate risk communications between the board and the leaders in risk management that lead to a better and more effective relationship. #riskmanagement #decisionmaking,#riskgovernance
