Jacob Evanek, UVM technician, Utility Vegetation Management (UVM) services, Davey Resource Group, was in the middle of doing a hazard tree patrol for a utility client in Horseheads, New York, when he came across a house with a tree that needed to be removed. After approaching, he saw the two front doors were left open. Jacob knocked but didn't hear a response, so he looking inside to find an elderly man lying on the ground, unable to get up. He left the house to call the man's family member due to the lack of phone service in the area and came back to find two other family members pulling up to the property. Together, they lifted the man onto the couch before Jacob went with one of the family members to her house down the street to call Emergency Medical Services. "We come across so many different situations with different people, and when somebody is in clear need of help, we have to do something," he said. "If I were in the homeowner's shoes, I'd want somebody there if I'm not doing well." Thank you, Jacob, for living Davey's integrity value!

After a Southwest U.S. communications company upgraded to fiber lines, Davey Resource Group, Inc. (DRG) was called to help remove old copper drop wires from homes and businesses in several states. Today is America Recycles Day! Earlier this year, Davey was proud to announce the opening of its biochar facility in East Dundee, Illinois. This facility will recycle wood waste from client properties and turn it into an environmentally friendly soil additive, biochar. What exactly is biochar? Biochar is a carbon-rich charcoal-like substance that offers many benefits to the soil. Just to name a few of the many benefits of biochar: * It helps with nutrient retention. * It remediates salt and heavy metals in the soil. * It prevents soil compaction * Biochar can be used in lawn care and vegetable gardens too. Twelve Davey offices in the Chicago area recycle biomass into biochar. Perseverance has been a theme throughout Josh Piquette’s Davey journey. He joined Davey as the branch manager for the Montgomery County (CLS) territory when Davey acquired his previous employer, Elizabeth River Lawn and Landscape, a Davey company, in 2018. “We had to learn Davey – different safety models, different business models,” he said. “It was quite an undertaking, and I wouldn’t trade it for the world because it was so much exposure so quick. You had no choice but to learn it, grasp it and move forward.” It took perseverance, and the lessons stuck with him – especially during the pandemic when Josh and his team were challenged to explore new sales verticals. It helped to see perseverance modeled at every level. “It was a lot of thinking outside the box, and we were coached from the top,” he said. “There was some positivity in every message, and you had operations managers and vice presidents wanting to get down in the trenches and help out teams all across the country.” Navigating arduous times with perseverance has helped Josh lead his team with confidence as they maintain and enhance landscapes in the Baltimore and Washington, D.C. region. “To say I’ve made it out on the other side, and I’ve been successful, definitely resonates with me, knowing the perseverance paid off,” he said. “And then you coach your team to live the same way you’re living, and feel the same thing you’re feeling, because whether you’re an employee-owner or not, we take pride in what we’re doing, and we can all be successful.” #LivingOurValues #Perseverance #DaveyDifference #theDaveyway
