Proposed Clinical Laboratory Price Transparency Bill If passed, bill would require clinical laboratories to inform patients of their prices in advance of services. IN DECEMBER, THE CLINICAL LABORATORY PRICE TRANSPARENCY ACT OF 2023 was referred to the U.S. House Ways and Means Subcommittee on Health for final approval. The bill requires labs to disclose information regarding pricing before administering services. The goal is to ensure patients better understand their healthcare costs. Restoring Transparency The bill was originally proposed as part of the Larger Costs, More Transparency Act in January 2023. If passed, the bill (HR 4882) will compel providers of certain laboratory services to publish their prices online in an easily readable format. Providers must also publish and update discounted cash prices or gross charges, where applicable, at least once a year. UK Biobank Launches Large, Comprehensive Study of the Human Proteome Study is expected to result in new clinical laboratory test biomarkers based on proteins shown to be associated with specific diseases In January, the UK Biobank announced the launch of the “world’s most comprehensive study” of the human proteome. The study focuses on proteins circulating throughout the human body. Researchers involved in this endeavor hope the project will transform disease detection and lead to clinical laboratory blood tests that help diagnosticians identify illnesses earlier than with conventional diagnostics.
