关于我们

The Daily Tar Heel is a student-run newspaper that serves the communities of UNC-Chapel Hill and Orange County, N.C. Here at The DTH, we are fiscally and editorially independent. DTH Media Corp., a non-profit organization, stopped taking UNC student fees in 1993 and has since been fully funded by its advertising revenue, the 1893 Brand Studio and private giving. Student journalists are solely responsible for all DTH content under the direction of the editor-in-chief. The 2023-24 editor-in-chief is Emmy Martin. The DTH also comprises the 1893 Brand Studio, a student-powered agency that merges traditional storytelling values with modern marketing strategies. The studio offers a range of services – from graphic design work, to social media guidance, to the creation of paid content. The paper’s business operations are governed by a 12-member, student-majority board of directors whose open slots are filled by the board each spring for the next year. At any give time, approximately 300 UNC students can rightly claim to be a member of the DTH staff in news, production design, advertising sales, marketing and customer service positions. The student payroll exceeds $250,000 per year. The company also employs three professional staff in support functions.

Last week, the Editor Selection Committee chose Laney Crawley to be The Daily Tar Heel's next editor-in-chief. Crawley's signature color is pink.?She enters The Daily Tar Heel newsroom every day in a rosy ensemble, right down to the backpack, ready to get to work as the newspaper's opinion editor. For her fellow editors and co-workers, like University Editor Lauren Rhodes, the color is symbolic of the welcoming and joyful presence Crawley brings to the newsroom. Crawley is a?current UNC?sophomore?majoring in media and journalism and political science. She began?working at The DTH during?her first semester at UNC. She worked as a staff writer for the City &?State desk during the 2022-23 school year and served as assistant opinion editor last fall before being promoted to opinion editor this semester. Crawley is the first Black woman to be selected as editor-in-chief of The DTH. After 131 years, Crawley said she is proud of the accomplishment — but?disappointed it took this long. Nine newsrooms. One crisis. This is the Mental Health Collaborative. The Daily Tar Heel partnered with eight other college newspapers to report on mental health challenges shared by those in each of their communities, resulting in more than 30 reported stories and seven opinion pieces. This initiative began in 2023 when The Daily Tar Heel was awarded a grant from the Solutions Journalism Network as part of its Student Media Challenge initiative. That grant helped fund the collaborative work of this project. Many of the stories you will read in this collaborative do more than just present a problem — they also explore solutions to this crisis. The Daily Tar Heel has had the privilege of working with The A&T Register, The Duke Chronicle, The East Carolinian, The Niner Times, The Old Gold & Black, The Pendulum, The Seahawk and Technician on this project. While there’s still more that must be done, this is a step toward that future. We hope that this mental health collaborative project serves as a call to action to create a future where no one suffers in silence. ?? Today, The Daily Tar Heel published its inaugural music edition! Since August, Eliza Benbow and Emi Maerz have expanded The DTH's arts and culture coverage, and this edition is the next iteration of their hard work. Alongside Natalie Faye Bradin and McKenzie Bulris, we also launched Editors' Notes – a video music series platforming local artists. UNC sophomore Bill Moore paved the way with a beautiful performance in our office earlier this month. We collaborated on this special edition to celebrate the launch of Editors' Notes and highlight all the amazing musical artistry in Chapel Hill and Carrboro. Be sure to get yours in blue boxes in Chapel Hill, Carrboro and on UNC's campus!
