The Daily Cardinal

I am absolutely thrilled to share I've been elected as next year's Managing Editor for the The Daily Cardinal. I am so grateful for this opportunity to lead the paper alongside incoming Editor-in-Chief Frankie Pica. In my experience at UW-Madison so far, I've dedicated many hours to a small windowless room, editing and writing articles. I look forward to devoting even more hours in the room which shaped me as a journalist and using my platform to engage students on campus and advocate for underrepresented communities in Wisconsin. I would also like to thank the current Managing Editor Tyler Katzenberger who has been my role model and editor since I stepped foot in the office, and Editor-in-Chief Drake White-Bergey for accommodating and having faith in my ideas while also being a voice of balance. Frankie and I appreciate how you both guided the paper and we look forward to shifting focus on the 2024 election which will be a crucial race to keep eyes on in Wisconsin. Lastly, everyone at the paper is extremely important to me and I'd also like to thank them for their hard work. I am so lucky to have learned from you all and I can't wait to work with you all again for another year!

I'm a little late to post but I just wanted to say I am so honored to take home first place in the Breaking News Reporting category at the?Wisconsin Newspaper Association awards alongside Frankie Pica, Liam Beran, and Ava Menkes for our reporting on UW Systems and DEI. I also took home second place alongside Gabriella Hartlaub in the Use of Multimedia category for a Cardinal Call episode we were featured on. On the episode, we talked about our story: 'The culture is not for us': Black students share experiences at Blk Pwr Coalition town hall. This year, The Daily Cardinal won 30 of the contest's 60 awards, including the Wisconsin Newspaper Association Collegiate General Excellence award for the second year in a row. I am so incredibly proud of all my amazing colleagues, and I look forward to what the next year has in store!

I'm honored to share that I received second place in the Wisconsin Newspaper Association Awards In-Depth Story category. I received the award for my reporting on experiences of community and loneliness for UW-Madison Jewish students after the Oct. 7 attacks in Israel. Our staff took home the Collegiate General Excellence award for the second year in a row and won 30 of the contest's 60 awards! I began my role as editor-in-chief of The Daily Cardinal last May. Now, 10 months later and for the second year in a row, the Cardinal has won the Wisconsin Newspaper Association Collegiate General Excellence award, the top honors for collegiate newspapers in Wisconsin. The Cardinal won 30 of the contest's 60 awards, and we swept in the categories of Collegiate Journalist of the Year, Breaking News, News Photography and Sports Photography. Campus news editor Liam Beran won 2023 Wisconsin Collegiate Journalist of the Year. I couldn't be more proud of Liam for all of his hard work, dedication, and countless hours spent acting as a watchdog over UW-Madison and the UW System. I personally won three awards — first place for News Photography, second place for News Photography, and third place for Feature Photography. I'd like to thank Sophia Vento and Jessica Sonkin for their work and continued dedication to the Cardinal. They served as editor-in-chief and managing editor, respectively, during the spring of 2023, and it was the groundwork they helped lay which got this paper where it is today. None of this would be possible without Tyler Katzenberger. I couldn't more grateful for having Tyler by my side throughout this process. Nothing we've accomplished this year would be possible without him, and I'm forever grateful that I've had the honor to work with the finest journalist to ever come from UW-Madison. I'm incredibly honored to announce that I've been named the Wisconsin Newspaper Association 2023 Collegiate Journalist of the Year for my reporting with The Daily Cardinal. Working as a reporter and editor for the paper has been one of the highlights of my college experience, and I can't thank my fellow Cardinal staffers enough. I also received first-place honors in the Freedom of Information award category, which highlights stories that further public transparency and accountability. I received the award for a November public records article I wrote on UW System budget issues and UW System President Jay Rothman's suggestion that chancellors shift away from liberal arts at campuses serving low-income students. In addition, I received second and third place honors in the public affairs and breaking news categories respectively. A special thanks to Tyler Katzenberger and Drake White-Bergey for nominating me and for the work they do throughout the paper. They've been constantly there for me as mentors and friends and supported me throughout any situation that's come our way. Thank you for pushing me to be the best reporter and editor I can be.
