This week’s featured artist is internationally renowned artist, printmaker, and sculptor Chakaia Booker whose diverse body of work can be seen in all three of our exhibitions on view at The Current.? Chakaia Booker’s work has spanned decades with an intentionality of practice and purpose. She chooses discarded tires to create beauty from detritus and elegance from industry, allowing the viewer to appreciate the abstract materialism or look deeper into the strong underpinnings of social, racial, feminist, and environmental justice. Her work at The Current, both inside and out, highlights beauty and hardship, and tradition and caretaking. The breadth of work includes a commissioned outdoor sculpture and inside The Current, her photographs, prints, and sculptures fill the galleries. The work asks the viewers to take time to listen, lean in, to contemplate, to heal, to work, to create, to be. Booker will be offering a free public artist talk with master printmaker, Justin Sanz, at The Current on October 17 at 5pm in our galleries. (This is a very special opportunity with extremely limited seating so RSVP at https://lnkd.in/ebSmrzvh to reserve your spot.)? . . . @gostowe @stowevibrancy @stoweartsandculture @thecurrenteducation @chakaiabooker @davidnolangallery @j.snza @efa.rbpmw @bloombergconnects @vtartscouncil @garmentdistrictnyc #stoweartsandculture #contemporaryart? #sculpture #stoweart #802arts #artisttalk #outdoorsculpture #outdoorart #printmaking

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: Mary Mattingly Mary Mattingly is an artist who makes sculptures and photographs about imagined futures. She builds sculptural ecosystems that prioritize access to food, shelter, and clean water, resulting in large-scale participatory projects around the world. These underwater gardens are collages made with a fish tank, mirrors, digital collage, and physically cutting and pasting images together to imagine plant evolution in the riparian zone. These watery landscapes allow Mattingly to dream as she imagines assisted plant migration and plant adaptation in the near future. When the collages are completed, they are rephotographed. This series of work is reflective of the “power of water, time, and the life force of the riparian edge.” Mattingly explains such work as “a reminder that it is a right and responsibility to care for these cycles.” Visit our current exhibition “In the Garden” before it closes on April 11 to view these works in person. If you are interested in collecting these works, contact our curatorial team at [email protected]. ??: “Lotic Shoal,” Mary Mattingly, 2023 “Riparian Edge,” Mary Mattingly, 2023 “Moon Field,” Mary Mattingly, 2023 “Night Garden,” Mary Mattingly, 2023

As we enter the final weeks of “In the Garden,” we have one more opportunity to explore and engage with this exhibition’s themes of connection and cultivation. ?? Don’t miss “Currently Speaking: Gardening out of Context”? THIS THURSDAY, April 4 at 5pm in our galleries. Join Certified Horticulturist Gavin Boyce-Ratliff for part 1 of a 2-part series (part 2 a spring outdoor planting as part of Exposed 2024) looking at the confluence of naturalistic garden design and the New England vernacular. Gavin will explore ecologically-driven design considerations, the importance of thoughtful site analysis, and management practices that help create meaningful landscapes in our changing climate. The “Currently Speaking” series hosts experts in various contemporary art genres and media to encourage casual discourse and meaningful interactions between our community, speakers, and the art they showcase. Event is free and all are welcome. . . . #stoweartsandculture #contemporaryart #inthegarden #currentlyspeaking #gardening #landscapes #climatechange #ecologicaldesign?
