Meta and generative AI training—tomorrow's the day! As a creative professional who loves embracing change and progress, I really see the value in generative AI. However, as an attorney at The Creative Lawyers, I can't stress enough the importance of reading the fine print of any platform's privacy policy before you post and share your creative works. For example, starting June 26, 2024, Meta can use your data (like posts and photos) to train its generative AI models. This includes content you post on Facebook, Facebook Messenger, Instagram, and WhatsApp (Note: Meta says that content shared in private messages is excluded.) And here's the real kicker—even if you don't post on these platforms, if someone else posts your content, it's fair game. What can you do if you don't want your content used this way? Your best bets are to try and opt-out, as Meta says it will "review objection requests in accordance with relevant data protection laws," or change your profile settings to private to help reduce this risk. Check out MIT Technology Review's recent article to learn more about how to opt-out (article link in the comments below.) (Photo: QubixStudio/Shutterstock)
