The Council on Recovery is Houston’s oldest & largest non-profit organization providing prevention, education, intervention, treatment, and recovery services for individuals and their families affected by alcoholism, drug abuse, and co-occurring mental health disorders. Founded in 1946, The Council is the only organization of its kind providing services to every age and stage in life: Programs for new mothers and babies. Child and adolescent services. Adult outpatient rehab and treatment. Family recovery and support. Specialized services for the elderly. The Council truly helps people throughout their entire lives. At the heart of The Council is the Center for Recovering Families, Houston’s premier outpatient addiction and mental health treatment facility, changing lives of individuals and their families through holistic programs that heal the body, mind, and spirit. The Center for Recovering Families offers a full spectrum of treatment programs and therapeutic services for adults, adolescents, and children with the goal of helping clients personally recover and rejoin their families in a healthy, loving, and supportive manner. These include: ? Comprehensive Assessment ? Healing Choices, 8-week intensive outpatient treatment program ? Relapse & Renewal Clinic for those struggling with sobriety ? Intervention Services ? Family Recovery Services, including individual and group therapy ? Adolescent Services & Parent Education ? Children’s Clinical Services & Kids Camp The Council on Recovery, through our publicly-funded programs, also offers a helping hand to those without insurance or financial resources who may need it the most. The Council truly does what many traditional rehab centers don’t - we turn no one away. Today, we held a press conference in honor of Hispanic and Latine Heritage Month in partnership with El Centro de Corazón and the Hispanic/Latino Behavioral Health Center of Excellence. Remarks were shared by Council President and CEO Mary Beck, Council Director of Community Behavioral Health Diane Arms, and CEO of El Centro Marcie Mir about our efforts in providing recovery services to the Hispanic community. Our partnership with El Centro has now screened over 1,000 patients for substance use, with plans for expanded services in the next year. Council Advisory Board Member Victor Alvarez shared then his journey to recovery, helping to fight against the stigma within the Hispanic and Latine communities. We were honored to host multiple elected officials and local stakeholders, as well as KPRC and Haley Hernandez. Meet The Council's newest team member, Emmy! Emmy, a three-year-old black Lab mix, came home to The Council’s therapist Sarah Myint, LMSW in August after completing more than a year of training to become a community service dog. Emmy was born, raised, and educated at Canine Assistants, a non-profit organization based in Milton, Georgia dedicated to educating people and dogs so they may enhance the lives of one another. Sarah is a Therapist at the Center for Recovering Families within The Council. Emmy has already been present in individual therapy and group sessions in intensive outpatient therapy; she will soon join school-based group sessions and The Council’s program for those seeking treatment through Felony Mental Health Court. Sarah is excited to continue exploring opportunities with Emmy at The Council to help make therapy more accessible and approachable.
