Thanks to Michael Corley and Read Corley for the platform (my first podcast!) to create awareness around the urgency of retaining your leadership. People are your most valuable asset for success, regardless of industry or taxable status. My message was to reflect what is at stake financially when top talent walks out the door and to explain the importance of appropriate benefits to keep the people who keep you in business. #nfp #executivebenefits #nfpexecutivebenefits

A new episode of I501(c)You is out today! We speak with Derik Timmerman, founder of Sparrow Nonprofit Solutions, about nonprofit leadership, consulting and why nonprofits should act more like for-profits. Derik spent time in the military, serving 2 tours in Iraq before joining McKinsey & Company for 7 years. During his years at McKinsey, Derik realized he got more "soul food" from his work with nonprofits and left to start Sparrow Nonprofit Solutions. Derik provides a unique perspective on nonprofit leadership. He brings with him his knowledge from McKinsey & Co. combined with a philosophical understanding of the nonprofit sector. Together, we discuss the major differences between for-profit and nonprofit talent, and how nonprofits should rethink hiring. We also discuss earned income for nonprofits, something Derik challenges any organization to invest in, and characteristics of an effective nonprofit board member and executive director. It is a new fiscal year and the board members are sick ?? of wordsmithing strategic planning documents... ???? Our prescription is a 2-hour strategic prioritization process. ?? ?? Meeting Agenda: 1?? Ground yourself in the mission 2?? Perform a SWOT analysis 3?? Discuss Aspirations 4?? Prioritize the aspirations while considering your SWOT analysis 5?? Step back - and hand it off to staff The board sets the strategy and the staff executes it. The longer the board takes to set the strategy, the less time the staff has to execute it. Set your staff up for success by determining the direction of the organization and getting out of the way Watch this week's episode at the link below or listen wherever you get your podcasts: https://lnkd.in/ek2BKMhR #nonprofit #podcast #strategy

"How do you make the organization not dependent on or defined by one individual?" This question is the essence of this week's episode of I501(c)You with Kerry Diaz. From the first day, the CEO needs to be intentional about bringing your staff along. "Have you met a nonprofit CEO who thinks they have spare time?" When you bring your staff along and build them up to take on more responsibility, the CEO gets left to do "what they are uniquely qualified to do."
