The Committee on Global Thought is a cross-disciplinary space that provides a forum to address the challenges and opportunities of the twenty-first-century world. The Committee pursues its mission not only within the academy but also in cooperation with policy-makers, journalists, architects and urban planners, practitioners from the international financial community, filmmakers, artists, and representatives of international, non-governmental, and not-for-profit institutions.

  • Celebrating a decade of the MA in Global Thought ?? ?? ?? This past weekend, the Committee on Global Thought welcomed alumni, current students, former chairs, faculty, and more to reminisce on the last 10 years of what it means to be a scholar in Global Thought. ?? Over a span of 2 days, activities, keynote speakers, and insightful conversation made us reflect on the progress we’ve made in tackling complex global challenges by shaping the next generation of leaders. In discussing globality in academia and beyond, Global Thought teaches us that emerging perspectives are equally as important as traditional ones.     Where can your MA in Global Thought take you? Meet CGT Alumna, Ana Sofia Salas (Class of 2024)! Ana Sofia Salas has a diverse background in international relations and cultural diplomacy. After studying International Relations at Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico City, she moved to New York City to work at the Mexican Consulate, focusing on legal aid for violence and human trafficking cases within the Protection Department. She then became the Program Coordinator at the Mexican Cultural Institute, orchestrating high-profile events like the Empire State Building lighting for Mexico's Independence Day (2022 and 2023) and Mexico Week: Dia de los Muertos at Rockefeller Center 2022. Ana Sofia completed her Master’s in Global Thought at Columbia University in 2024 and now serves as Assistant Manager of Government and Foundations Giving at the Kennedy Center, where she manages over 20 donors and raises nearly $3 million annually for the Kennedy Center, Washington National Opera, and National Symphony Orchestra.     What does an MA in Global Thought student look like? As our MA program approaches its 10th year, here are some fun facts about this year's diverse cohort: 1.) All combined, students in the Class of 2025 speak more than 20 languages ??? 2.) This year's cohort brings the total number of countries represented by CGT students to 63. We now have students who hail from Afghanistan, Haiti, Slovakia, and Uganda ?? 3.) Students' capstone essays will tackle a wide range of global issues, including the socioeconomic legacies of colonialism, the problem of linguistic hegemony in large language models, and how to regulate the global textile industry ??     ?? The MA in Global Thought is turning 10! ?? ?? This year, we celebrate a decade of shaping future global leaders, thinkers, and changemakers. Over the past 10 years, the MA in Global Thought program at Columbia University has provided students with a unique interdisciplinary education, preparing them to tackle complex global challenges. In honor of our 10th anniversary, here are some fun facts about our first year as a program at Columbia University: 1.) Seventeen students from?nine countries graduated from our first class. 2.) In the first year of the MA in Global Thought, students took all of their?core courses in the fall and all of their electives (plus MA Seminar) in the spring. 3.) Some of the first MA essays focused on reclaiming dying languages, the developmental impact of China's SEZs, the gentrification of Bushwick in global context, and the impact of ICT at Davos. ?? To all our alumni, faculty, and current students—thank you for being part of this incredible journey. We look forward to celebrating this milestone with you all!

    The Committee on Global Thought was honored to host Professor Wafaa El-Sadr, Executive VP of Columbia Global, at our Undergraduate Committee on Global Thought launch event on September 17th.
