Congratulations to our reporter John Ingold for winning a prestigious award for business reporting! How bad is medical debt in Colorado? What is the cause of the problem? The scale? And, most?importantly, what’s the impact on Coloradans? John teamed with reporters, editors and photographers from KUSA-TV, 9NEWS, KFF Health News and Colorado Newsline — all working together with the COLab, the Colorado News Collaborative — to find out. What came from it was a multi-part series that helped change Colorado law. John and his collaborators found that Colorado’s largest hospital system, UCHealth, sued thousands of patients a year for unpaid debt while keeping its name off the lawsuits and away from public scrutiny. This revelation came after combing through dozens of court cases — and heading to the courthouse to talk to real people going through lawsuits. In response, Colorado lawmakers passed a law preventing hospitals from concealing their involvement in lawsuits against patients. A win for Coloradans! Last week, “Diagnosis: Debt Colorado” was awarded the prestigious Best in Business Awards in the Personal Finance category from SABEW, the Society for Advancing Business Editing and Writing.
