When Choudhury Imtiaz joined The City Tutors’ first 2025 event at Five Iron Golf – Flatiron, he didn’t expect how quickly it would transform his network. ?? “What an amazing initiative!” Imtiaz shared. “After the event, I applied as a mentee and was matched with a mentor almost immediately. Events like this are a game-changer for newcomers. Thank you for having me!” But Imtiaz didn’t stop there—he also applied to become a mentor himself. His story embodies why The City Tutors creates these spaces: to break down barriers, spark connections, and build a supportive community in NYC. Building Connections, Strengthening Community On January 18, over 30 mentors, mentees, and program partners gathered for an afternoon of golf, networking, and conversation, thanks to event organizer Morgan Rankey and the Young Leaders Council (YLC). Afterward, attendees continued connecting at Grey Bar. ?? Noah Ibasitas: “Mentors were approachable, insightful, and generous with their advice. Most importantly, they reminded me of the power of self-belief.” ?? Mohammad Mahmud: “Playing golf was the perfect way to connect. I left with great career advice and new peers in my field—a mix of fun and networking.” ?? Rosilveri Estevez: “It was inspiring to meet mentors and mentees with shared experiences. I left feeling understood and motivated.” ?? Britnie Walsh: “I connected with like-minded people, gained new perspectives, and even learned a sport I’d never tried before! Growth happens when we step outside our comfort zones.” Mentors Weigh In ?? Shreyans Sheth (Bloomberg): “As a mentor, it’s rewarding to pay forward the guidance I’ve received. Events like these help mentees navigate industry trends.” ?? Samuel Wu (Google): “It’s refreshing to connect with students face-to-face. Indoor golf was a great icebreaker for deep career conversations.” The Vision Behind the Event Event organizer Morgan Rankey shared: ??? “Meeting in person strengthens mentoring relationships. I’ve had mentors become friends, and I want others to experience the same.” These events don’t just build networks—they accelerate growth. “Your network is your net worth.” Looking Ahead With more events ahead, The City Tutors will keep bringing mentors, mentees, and partners together to create career opportunities. For Imtiaz and others, this was just the beginning. Events like these help make NYC a more connected and supportive place—one relationship at a time. ?? Were you at the event? Share your takeaways in the comments!

Aviation is all around us. In New York City, with two major airports—LaGuardia and JFK—planes crisscross the skies, following flight paths that millions of New Yorkers stare at every day. Yet for most, those planes represent something distant: a ticket to somewhere else. Rarely do they imagine being the person who helps make aviation happen—whether as an engineer, mechanic, pilot, or part of the intricate network of operations and logistics that keeps the industry running. The City Tutors and Vaughn College of Aeronautics and Technology are partnering to change that. Vaughn, located right next to LaGuardia Airport, has built a legacy of launching BIPOC learners into aviation and STEM careers, with alumni working at organizations like NASA, Lockheed Martin, and Delta Air Lines. Through this partnership, we’re creating new pathways to help New Yorkers see themselves not just as passengers but as part of this incredible field—whether designing, maintaining, or managing the engineering marvels that take flight every day. “Vaughn College has always served as a direct pipeline for New York City residents, especially those from underserved and underrepresented communities, to become part of the incredible opportunities available in aviation and aerospace,” said Sharon DeVivo, President of Vaughn College. “Our vision is to change the world one student at a time with a transformational education that provides a lifetime of opportunity—with that comes an understanding of the type of educational experience that we need to create for students to be successful. The partnership with The City Tutors program is a wonderful extension of that experience as it provides a platform for students to be role models and mentors to young people. Vaughn students can demonstrate how they have pursued their dream and inspire the next generation that they can achieve theirs too.” “This is about more than just Vaughn or The City Tutors,” Garri Rivkin, Executive Director of The City Tutors, added. “It’s about making aviation accessible to people who’ve been told they don’t belong or wouldn’t succeed. We’re building a pipeline of knowledge, support, and encouragement—one that shows learners what’s possible and gives them the tools to get there. We need industry leaders to help us make this vision a reality.” Image provided thanks to Jeff Yapalater @Airport Voice

Paramount is a true partner in every sense of the word. They don’t just offer resources—they offer their hearts, their leadership, and their belief in the potential of our learners. During this recent mentorship event, our community had the rare privilege of direct access to Global Chief of Finance for Paramount Naveen Chopra, other senior leaders, and so many talented professionals across technology and finance. This wasn’t just support—it was a conversation, a space where hope and ambition were nurtured and allowed to bloom. For so many of our learners—first-generation students, immigrants, individuals who may have grown up watching Paramount shows and whispering to themselves, *“Maybe I could be part of this someday”—*these moments mean everything. They take quiet, uncertain hopes and turn them into sparks of determination, moments of belief, and the beginnings of real, transformative growth. As Naveen shared, “Every time our Finance and Technology teams work with The City Tutors, it is a privilege for all of us. There are so many avenues you can take in media, so our goal is always to help students leave mentoring sessions with new ideas about professional paths they may not have known existed and give insight into how to jump-start their own careers. I am continually impressed by the informed questions and viewpoints students bring to the table.” For our learners, this isn’t just about networking—it’s about realizing that their dreams are valid, that their voices are heard, and that they belong. We’re so excited for what’s ahead with Paramount and the promises they continue to fulfill for this city and its people. Together, we’re redefining what mentorship and inclusion can achieve. Thank you Adam Robinson, Rita Papadogiannis, and Harold Anderson for your partnership and guidance. #Paramount #TheCityTutors #MentorshipMatters #NYCTalent #InclusiveWorkforce #FirstGenerationDreams https://lnkd.in/eS-r_Dt3

Dear The City Tutors Community, At The City Tutors, we’re creating something extraordinary—a citywide mentoring and tutoring system that transforms opportunities for underrepresented communities. Together, we’ve built a program that NYC learners rely on, thanks to the collective effort of our volunteer community. One-third of our annual budget is powered by mentors, advocates, and donors like you. Now, we’re inviting you to strengthen our impact by ensuring three months of programming in advance. Let’s start with January. In honor of National Mentor Appreciation Month, we are holding a fundraiser to make sure we can continue to serve our amazing NYC community. Our goal is to raise $14,000, which will fund one month of 1:1 tutoring or mentoring, and the mentorship event series. If we reach $21,000, you’ll have fully funded one month of all our programming, including events, tutoring, and 1:1 mentorships. Donating through this link can ensure we can continue mentoring and tutoring programs. In 2024, our collective effort achieved incredible milestones: — 1,220 mentorships launched—the most in our history. — 1,600+ tutoring hours delivered to middle school, high school, and GED learners. — 80 mentorship events connecting nearly 3,000 learners to industry professionals. These programs are vital for learners who are often navigating their educational and career paths without support or networks. Together, we can ensure they have the resources and guidance they need to succeed. You can check out all our Instagram and Linkedin for @thecitytutors for the previous activities we posted. If you have any questions, send us an email at [email protected]. Warm Regards, Social Media Creatives City Tutors

"Even dark moments are not burials. They're plantings." — Mayor ERIC ADAMS. The pandemic affected every part of the family unit, exacerbating existing vulnerabilities. It brought uncertainty about work, food, education, and the future itself. It was from this crisis that The City Tutors emerged, spinning off from The City University of New York to evolve for communities most in need—those navigating multigenerational trauma, wondering if anyone was there to hear their distress call. We planted something bold: a no-cost tutoring and mentoring network designed to run 365 days a year, centering communities historically excluded from opportunity. Through partnerships with nonprofits, companies, and individuals from across New York City and beyond, we’re creating a digital and physical infrastructure that New Yorkers can rely on to improve their education and lives. We’re still building it. It’s early, but already thousands of learners turn to us yearly, and we’re committed to meeting their trust with action. Attending the State of the City address at the Apollo Theater was a powerful reminder of NYC’s resilience and potential. Mayor Adams highlighted our city’s unmatched creativity in tackling challenges of scale that no other city faces. It’s that same spirit we draw on every day. The City Tutors began as a planting in a dark time. With the continued determination of New Yorkers and the support of partners across sectors, we’re growing something that can benefit generations to come. We won’t stop. ---Garri Rivkin, Executive Director, The City Tutors

This summer, we had the pleasure of collaborating with the S Jay Levy Fellowship for Future Leaders, welcoming The City College of New York Fellow Shale Lucas to our software engineering team. Shale's dedication and expertise significantly enhanced our platform's security and usability, directly benefiting the NYC learners we serve. Thanks to the S Jay Levy Fellowship, Shale was able to complete these hours with financial support, while gaining real-world experience in a collaborative tech environment. Our partnership provided him with meaningful opportunities to make an impact and engage in projects similar to those he might encounter on a professional tech team. Garri Rivkin, Executive Director, The City Tutors: The S Jay Levy Fellowship is a tremendous asset to The City Tutors. This partnership allows fellows like Shale to take on real projects that enhance the experience for NYC’s learners and lead to meaningful improvements in our platform. We want CUNY students like Shale to be fully prepared for their post-college careers, knowing how critical hands-on experiences are for their competitiveness in the job market. At the same time, as a small organization, we need sufficient time to train fellows and allow them to tackle complex projects. This fellowship supports our growth and provides students with the substantial, career-building experience they need to excel. Lavie Margolin, MA, Managing Director, S Jay Levy Fellowship: The City Tutors provided a deeply meaningful experience to our fellow, Shale Lucas, over the summer of 2024. Shale was able to apply the technology skills applied in the classroom to support tutor and student success at the organization. The City Tutors was amazing to work with- this opportunity was created uniquely to meet Shale’s skillset and challenge him in just a matter of weeks. We are proud to have worked with the organization for a number of years. Shale L., S Jay Levy Fellow and Intern: My experience at The City Tutors was incredibly rewarding. Not only did I have the opportunity to learn from experienced engineers with various backgrounds, but I also contributed to a web application that challenged me to refine my problem-solving skills. Through this project, I honed my software engineering expertise by working on an established codebase with real-world impact. The chance to help families and students across NYC gain access to tutoring services made the work meaningful. None of this would have been possible without my participation in the S Jay Levy Fellowship.
