The City League

It’s going to be a huge summer for basketball in the Circle City! The WNBA All-Star Game, a highly anticipated Indiana Fever schedule, state-wide hoops competitions at the Indiana State Fair, and Indianapolis’ favorite roundball event, The City League. We are moving the schedule up a week in 2025! Opening night will tip on Wednesday, June 18th. We will battle for cash prizes and bragging rights on Championship Night - Thursday, July 31st! We are very excited for year #5 at the Boner Fitness and Learning Center!

We had a fantastic day out at the Irsay YMCA yesterday putting on a youth basketball clinic for 75 kids from all over Indiana. A handful of former Big Ten players, hailing from the Hoosier state, shared their hoops expertise with young people from South Bend, Evansville, Rossville, and Indianapolis prior to to the Big Ten Women’s Tournament Title bout between UCLA & USC! Big shoutout to the Big Ten Conference and the Indiana Sports Corp for partnering with us on a beautiful event! Special thank you to our Big Ten players Eron Harris, Lisa Shepherd-Stidham, Dee Dee Williams, John Hart, and Karissa McLaughlin for sharing their time & wisdom. Also want to thank Dominic Washington and Rachael Gregory for the time they spent working on 3rd-6th grade jumpers! TCL Board members David Jones, Porchia Green, and Emmanuel Colon-Romero helped make sure this was a great experience for the kids!

Our friend Hayden Thomas, MA representing The City League up at North Mass Boulder this afternoon! Thomas is the Communications Coordinator at North Mass and has been a big supporter of TCL over the last two years.

March Madness comes to Watkins Park in a little over a month! On March 19th we tip off the 4th season of PIVOT LEAGUE basketball on the west side! Central Indiana’s best young men’s basketball players will be competing for a $3K cash prize in Indianapolis’ workforce development league! In order to participate players must be employed, in school, or registered in EmployIndy Youth Employment System. This spring we are excited to have men from Indianapolis Urban League’s Young Professionals leadership group, Men of the Movement, on board and available to serve players in a mentorship role. In the fall of 2013 we started running an open gym at Little Bethel Missionary Baptist Church for young men in the neighborhoods around 30th & College. 11 years later things look a little different at The City League but the core goal of using basketball to nurture relationships and build community is still the same. On Saturday, we had the privilege to visit and interview 1953 Indiana Mr. Basketball Hallie Bryant. The 1983 Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame inductee will be part of a documentary film in the works exploring the story of Indianapolis' legendary Lockefield Dust Bowl!

Last night, we had the honor of hosting an incredible event to celebrate and show appreciation for our amazing sponsors and partners. It's been a fun last two months of basketball and community activities at the Boner Fitness & Learning Center and the Indiana State Fair. Thank you to everyone who played a part in continuing to build something special for our city! Special thank you to Steve Smitherman and CareSource for the support they gave The City League as the "League Leading Partner" for a third consecutive summer.
