Social determinants of health (SDOH) can be as basic as where you live — like whether your neighborhood has safe sidewalks or places to exercise. For many, lack of access to safe spaces makes it hard to stay active. As a participant in our Community Health Worker pilot, “Alan” and his health worker embraced mall walking as a solution. He stayed active, avoided Houston’s hot and humid weather, and kept up his regular check-ins with his health worker. Sickle cell disease can affect daily life in unexpected ways, creating barriers that keep kids from everyday activities like swimming. But with the right opportunities, education, and awareness, we can help kids overcome these barriers.
