In 2009, September 11 was officially designated as a National Day of Service and Remembrance. The purpose is to honor the victims, survivors, and responders of the events of 9/11 by inspiring Americans to participate in acts of service and foster a sense of community. Last year, the community of Queen Creek, Arizona, came together on the 9/11 Day of Service to help those in need in the area. The volunteers worked together on projects that helped provide much-needed support for at-risk youth, refugees, cancer patients, new parents, veterans, and more. “In May 2024, I graduated with my doctorate in education from Indiana University. “I also left a position that wouldn’t allow me to use my newly earned advanced degree. I had doubts and concerns about finding a new position. “It had been ten years since I last looked for a job. Outside of knowing that I needed to update my resume and that I could look on Indeed for jobs, I felt lost. “With the encouragement of my husband, I started attending the Active Job Search (AJS) group meetings held online. … I admit I felt intimidated the first time I joined an AJS session. “I watched in awe as the other job searchers shared their ‘Me in 30 Seconds.’ Listening to their 30-second elevator pitches about themselves, I faced my first challenge in my job search: redefining my professional skills and sharing how I could use these skills to benefit an employer in 30 seconds. “Terrifying as this was, this was one of many skills that helped me obtain my new position. “I learned to keep my responses to the interviewers’ questions within 90 seconds. “I learned how to tailor my resume for each position I applied. I also learn to add endorsements to my job accomplishments. “There was also plenty of positive reinforcement from other job seekers, as we were often encouraged to share feedback and any strategies that could help someone find a job. Everyone in the meeting was friendly and willing to help me find a job. “Lastly, the most important thing participating in AJS provided me was the emotional support that helped me remember that God knew and loved me. “The AJS missionaries encouraged me to remember my blessings, how God had brought me through many trials throughout my life and that He would bring me through this trial of finding employment. “Being a part of AJS helped me not feel alone and lost. “Every day in my job is something new. “Honestly, I love that aspect of my work. “One day, I am working on coordination for general conference; some days, I am in the studio filming with a member of the Quorum of the Twelve. “The next, I am in strategy discussions for Light the World and looking at multiple temple open house projects. The breadth of my work is exciting! To be involved in these types of projects at this point in my career is truly an honor. “Working for the Church can be complicated because finding a balance between inspiration and business is challenging. “Incorporating your belief system so fully into your work can be difficult. But at the end of the day, working here allows each of us to stretch professionally and grow our faith. “I love that my job allows me opportunities to make a difference, to have a voice, and to use that voice to do good! Many of us want to help those who mourn, but we struggle to know exactly what to do. We’re unsure about how to approach someone showing deep emotion. When Lazarus died, Jesus didn’t tell Mary and Martha to “cheer up,” even though He would soon raise Lazarus from the dead. Instead, He wept with them and validated how they felt, giving them time to mourn (see John 11:1–46). Our willingness to mourn with those who mourn supports others through their grieving process to find the ultimate healing and peace that come through the Savior’s Atonement. Groundbreaking services were held for the Santa Cruz Bolivia Temple on Saturday, June 8, 2024. Elder Jorge F. Zeballos, President of the Church’s South America Northwest Area, presided at the groundbreaking ceremony. Jhonny Fernández, mayor of the City of Santa Cruz, also attended. Giorgina Michelle Vaca, a speaker from the Santa Cruz Bolivia Abundancia Stake, expressed gratitude for being part of the third generation of her family in the Church. She shared the joy she feels of being minutes from the future temple. Her grandparents traveled days to other countries to worship in a temple, and her parents traveled hours for the same privilege.
