In recent years, Tulsa, Okla., has become one of the most welcoming places in America for immigrants and refugees. With significant help from local funders and nonprofits — from the family foundation of a billionaire to the YWCA Tulsa — it built infrastructure to help newcomers find their place in the community and economy, focusing on civic engagement, economic development, education, health and public safety. Amid President-elect Donald Trump’s calls to deport undocumented immigrants, and high-profile harassment of refugees and migrants in places like Springfield, Ohio, and Aurora, Colo., the city’s leaders — Democrats and Republicans — embrace newcomers as vital to the area’s health and prosperity. When DeAngela Burns-Wallace took the top job at the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation last year, one of her first tasks as a was to get staff members to talk to one another. Since 2020, the Kansas City grant maker’s employees had dwindled from 115 to 84. Morale, the board informed her, was dragging. Staff members across program areas didn’t have a clue what their colleagues were working on, and a lack of trust in leadership permeated the building. To bridge the foundation’s siloed programs, Burns-Wallace has restructured her staff, combining them into one “impact team.” Staffers are now asked to take a holistic view of the foundation’s efforts and assess how its grants to nonprofits and collaborations can improve life in the city. Nonprofits across the country are facing difficult financial straits that have led to hiring freezes, program cuts, layoffs, and in some cases, closures. The financial picture can shift quickly with little warning, leaving nonprofits too little time to raise the funds they need. In a survey in Minnesota, 79 percent of nonprofits said they expected to experience financial distress in the next 12 months, up from 47 percent in 2022. “We’re absolutely seeing more challenges for the nonprofit sector around financial distress, and the financial sustainability of organizations, along with a rising demand for services,” says Nonoko Sato, executive director of the Minnesota Council of Nonprofits. “We are getting calls from organizations that are about to close their doors very quickly.” Jim Rendon reports: https://lnkd.in/e99BMV5h

More than 150 charities have voiced opposition to a bill that could jeopardize the tax-exempt status of any charity deemed by the U.S. Department of the Treasury secretary to be supporting terrorism. Proponents say the bill is designed to punish nonprofits that support terrorist organizations. But the ACLU, Oxfam America and many other nonprofits fear that as president, Donald Trump might misuse the power by going after protesters and ideological opponents. Bill Clinton jokes that he felt lost when he first returned to private life in 2001, after his two terms as president, because people no longer played “Hail to the Chief” when he walked into a room. But what he found — chronicled in his new book, Citizen: My Life After the White House, published Tuesday by Knopf —was that philanthropy has allowed him to continue making changes in the world to help others. The former president discussed the Clinton Global Initiative, his efforts to raise money after disasters like Hurricane Katrina, and the need for continued aid to Haiti. https://lnkd.in/ee9k3H6E This article is part of a partnership the Chronicle has forged with The Conversation U.S. and The Associated Press to expand coverage of philanthropy and nonprofits.
