As my fellowship with The Charlotte Post Publishing Company has come to an end, I have gained a lot of experience writing in various fields of journalism, including arts and entertainment, sports and even news. Some of the skills that I have learned over the last few months include the following: Keeping stories as concise as possible, while keeping the main elements of the story in the article. Learning the importance of appealing to the audience of the newspaper. Continuing to write in a timely manner and appealing to required deadlines. Enhancing the ability to fact-check all information and make sure information is correct in your story-telling. Having the confidence to interview others in the public scene. Very thankful for the opportunity, as I aim to bring my skills back to The Daily Gamecock!

Some stories you want to tell. Then you discover others that need to be told. The idea first came across my path several months ago, when working on a feature about the first collegiate football game between HBCU's. Within weeks, the research began, followed by the initial interviews.? Within months, Bob Johnson, a key voice in the story and General Manager of The Charlotte Post Publishing Company, passed away. The urgency from everyone involved only intensified, knowing how much this project meant to him. It's my hope this piece honors Bob Johnson -- and the men he believed deserved to be acknowledged for their contributions to the game of baseball. NOTE: A huge shoutout to my colleague Michael Winn, who brought so much life to this script with his creative vision.

When you read a news story, how often do you think about the images and how they help bring the words to life? How many times has an image from a news story made an impact on you? The Charlotte Post Publishing Company hosted a fantastic forum last night at the James B. Duke Library on the campus of Johnson C. Smith University - JCSU about photojournalism and how the creative lens has captured 50 years of Black history in Charlotte. Charlotte Post editor-in-chief, Herbert White, discussed the importance of photojournalism, how it's different than other photography and the historical importance it has for a community. Troy Hull and Daniel Coston, both current photojournalists for The Charlotte Post, shared how their careers have evolved, their favorite assignments and photos, and how they approach getting photos that capture the story. As Herb told the group, "These two just know how to work with people." I've had the privilege to work with Troy and Daniel, and to hear them talk about which photographers inspire them and the passion for their work was truly a great experience.
