In 1944, Lindbergh persuaded United Aircraft to designate him a technical representative in the South Pacific to study aircraft performances under combat conditions. Traveling via Hawaii, Midway, Palmyra, Funafuti, Bougainville, and Green Island, Lindbergh arrived in New Guinea in late April, two months after leaving the United States. Despite being a civilian, Lindbergh flew on dawn patrols, joined rescue missions, and flew any combat mission that would get him to the front lines, and taught young pilots how to conserve fuel and fly longer-range missions. When Lindbergh left the South Pacific in September 1944, he had participated in 50 combat missions, and was credited with at least one kill — an event that profoundly affected him and which he wrote about in his book-length essay, Of Flight and Life (1948). DID YOU KNOW: He was perhaps the greatest spy in American history? He was fundamentally responsible for defeating Germany in World War II? His recommendations for engine settings allowed us to win the war in Asia sooner and saved thousands of lives? He was the only person who negotiated with the Germans who included in his negotiations refuge for the Jews? He visited a recently liberated Concentration Camp on his own time? He volunteered to fight in combat in World War II, despite being too old to be drafted, and was an outstanding combat pilot? Reliable and diverse sources such as the New York Times, the Chief of the U.S. Army Air Corps, his commanding officer in Asia, and the Official History of the U.S. Air Force all credit Lindbergh for saving thousands of American lives, shortening the war, and significant improvements in U.S. Security – not just in World War II but in Korea and Vietnam also. Arguably, Lindbergh did as much to enable the U.S. to win World War II as any other American. You didn’t know this? Perhaps because no aerospace engineer has ever investigated his legacy. Certainly not a Jewish one! His legacy is complicated, especially his pre-World War II political conflict with some Jewish Americans, but he also engaged in more courageous and righteous endeavors than is usually recognized. A big "thank you" to Erik Lindbergh for his tireless efforts to support the Aerospace Industry. Look for more information soon on the 100 year anniversary of the historic flight of Erik's Grandfather Charles Lindbergh.
It was another great turnout of stakeholders for this week’s MMPEC quarterly meeting. It’s evident the strength of Missouri’s defense sector and the critical role our military assets stationed at Ft. Leonard Wood, Whiteman Air Force Base, Rosecrans Air National Guard Base, Jefferson Barracks and the Missouri National Guard play in our national defense. Much gratitude is owed to the men and women serving our military who put it on the line each and every day. Thanks, as well, to our Missouri veterans for their past sacrifice and service. The commission was pleased to be addressed by Erik Lindbergh, grandson of aviation pioneer Charles Lindbergh, on the work of the St. Louis-based The Lindbergh Foundation and its plans to commemorate the 100th anniversary in 2026 of Charles Lindbergh’s historic transatlantic flight. Congratulations to Ft. Leonard Wood on its recognition by the Department of Defense as the winner of the 2024 Army Community Partnership award and to Boeing-St. Louis on its $20B contract award to build the Air Force’s Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) fighter.

In preparation for the 100-year anniversary of Charles Lindbergh completing the first transatlantic flight in his Spirit of St. Louis aircraft, the St. Louis-based The Lindbergh Foundation is working hard to gather regional support for their upcoming celebrations in 2026, ongoing #STEM activities and grants, and collaboration with the XPRIZE Foundation on a potential $1 billion space-based carbon removal project. (Thanks to Jim Curran for connecting leaders of the Lindbergh Foundation with community efforts in #StCharlesCounty.) #aerospace
