Using Apple AirPods Pro in transparency mode as hearing aids for mild hearing loss is actually not new, and can be an excellent gateway to hearing care for those with mild hearing loss! However, don’t expect any over-the-counter hearing solution to be as precise as a hearing aid fitted by a professional using best practices. See this conclusion from this 2021 National Acoustic Laboratories study published in The Hearing Review: “The gain provided by Headphone Accommodations for a given audiogram does not compensate for the reduced audibility and reduced loudness across the range of input sound levels in the same way that traditional hearing aids fit to NAL-NL2 do. In particular, loud sound levels are generally over-amplified in the AirPods Pro compared to NAL-NL2, while soft sound levels are under-amplified.”

Why early treatment for hearing loss is critical:
It is interesting to see the increasing amount of evidence regarding the association between hearing loss and dementia. Here's a new paper that investigated this association. While we cannot draw a conclusion about the underlying mechanisms or causality, it seems that #hearing aids can play a role in reducing dementia risk. This Danish study, the ACHIEVE study (www.achievestudy.org) and the studies at The University of Melbourne (see for example https://lnkd.in/dpAw4nYF) are all recent studies showing promising indications that addressing hearing loss has benefits for not only hearing, but cognitive health too. https://lnkd.in/dw97esZf
