I had the distinct pleasure of visiting Antelope Canyon in Navajo Nation last week, a slot canyon marked by wave-like striations and eye-catching curves. The Upper Canyon, which is pictured here, is called “Tse’ bighanilini” by the Navajo; in English, this translates to “the place where water runs through rocks.” During my time here, I thought about how similar life is and the lessons we can draw from this natural wonder: ?? Life is not always linear and completely straightforward. ?? We can’t always see around the curve or bend we face. ?? We are often confronted with the unknown – whether in our career path, in the pursuit of a new job or opportunity, or in life in general. The unknown can be scary, but it also can be exciting and beautiful. If water can find its way through rock, carving a distinctive and stunning path, then we can find a way through any difficulty, any obstacle, and any unknown we face, whether in our career or in our lives. ??Water keeps moving. As a Medical Affairs and pharma-focused recruitment firm, our team at The Carolan Group is associated with exciting new opportunities and new doors opening. However, while we are constantly getting new positions from our clients, we honestly don’t always have the RIGHT opportunity for our candidates at the EXACT moment we speak with them. Yesterday, I had a wonderful call with a long-time friend and very seasoned, impressive Sr. MSL who is freshly on the job market after unexpected downsizing at his former company. In our chat: ?? Last night, watching the World Series, in which the Los Angeles Dodgers have shut out my beloved home team, the New York Yankees, three times in a row, I was reminded of the critical importance of resilience and the power of staying in the game. ? ?? In the third inning, despite heavily stacked odds against him, a 23-year-old Yankee and New Jersey native stepped up to the plate and hit a grand-slam. In a singular moment, Anthony Volpe completely changed the game. ?? 2024 has been a VERY challenging year for many. I have seen more “Open to Work” announcements this year than I can remember in my 8 years at The Carolan Group. I have seen incredibly talented friends and colleagues seeking work for months. Tom Caravela and I have had countless conversations about how tight this market has been, how unforgiving… how demoralizing at times… ?? Last night’s game is a key reminder to KEEP SWINGING. Keep showing up. Keep believing in yourself. We have 62 days remaining in 2024. This symbolizes 62 days to step up to home plate, 62 chances to swing, 62 potential opportunities to hit that grand-slam. ?? ?? Are post-interview “Thank You” notes obsolete and outdated in 2024? ?? The short answer is ABSOLUTELY NOT! Many Hiring Managers specifically look to see if a candidate follows up after an interview. I recently connected with a best friend in the middle of the hiring process, who shared that out of 6 interviews, only 2 individuals circled back to her thereafter to share a “thank you” note. She was perplexed and disappointed – it cast the candidates who did NOT write a follow-up “thank you” in a different light. ?? Gratitude pays dividends in so many ways. Not only can the practice of expressing gratitude lift your own mood and shift your perspective (Yes, please! Sign me up for that!!!??♀?), but it can have a very significant, very REAL impact on the interview process and your candidacy for a role you genuinely want. ?? A “thank you” note does the following: ? 1.?It functions as a critical follow-up and can keep the interview process moving. ? 2.?It serves as opportunity to reiterate and re-highlight your qualifications and high enthusiasm for the position. It basically puts a spotlight on YOU over others in the candidate pool! ? 3.?It showcases a person's emotional intelligence. ? 4.?It is an example of your communication skills and relationship-building capabilities. ?? Lastly, it imparts positivity. It makes BOTH parties feel good. And that should not be overlooked or discounted. It is a valuable investment of your time that can truly tip the scales in your favor! ????
