A second source of uncertainty is the surge in investment being generated by firms trying to exploit advances in artificial intelligence. The enthusiasm for AI (if it proves warranted) could mean that the economy is in for intense productivity growth and higher returns on investment. This implies a higher natural level for real interest rates, which would set up a collision with the Federal Reserve’s efforts to bring rates down.
