correlation doesn't mean causation. all it means is that chances are if you have an issue with psychedelics it might be an indicator you might have mental illness. Since people with mental illnesses are supposed to be cautious with psychedelics in the first place. it takes years for microbes to build up for mental illness to show.
A new, large-scale study (n=9.2 million) found that patients with no previous history of psychosis who were admitted to an Emergency Department for concern related to psychedelic use had a 21x greater chance of being diagnosed with a persistent psychotic disorder within 3 years afterwards than compared to the general population. This was also significantly higher than for cannabis (which was also significantly higher than population base rate) and alcohol (mildly higher). See figures below for a visual representation. Quote from the principle investigator, Dr. Daniel Myran: “I hope this study can be a reminder or fuel a discussion about how little we actually know about both the potential health benefits and the potential health risks of?hallucinogens.” Medscape synopsis: https://lnkd.in/ggTJSY7q JAMA Psychiatry Article: https://lnkd.in/ghm4-ZqX #publichealth #drugpolicy #psychedelics #emergencydepartment
