The Oscars marked a culmination of an awards season that was mired in devastation from the wildfires in Los Angeles and controversy surrounding the Saint Laurent Productions-backed film “Emilia Perez.” The red carpet, despite the drama surrounding the event, brought subdued glamour and only a handful of looks that pushed the envelope. Designers tapped into tried-and-true head-turning strategies like method dressing. Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande brought their “Wicked” characters to life in gowns by Louis Vuitton and Schiaparelli, respectively. Timothée Chalamet reprised his Bob Dylan cosplay in a pastel yellow Givenchy suit with a cropped jacket. Other starts stuck to bold old Hollywood glamour, a trend we also saw at The Golden Globes earlier this year. Mikey Madison, who took home the award for Best Actress for her role in “Anora,” stunned in a pastel pink dress Dior complete with a bow, “Emilia Perez” actress Selena Gomez wore a sparkly off-the-shoulder Ralph Lauren gown, “The Substance” star Margaret Qualley wore a black Chanel number with an open back to show off her jewels. Menswear had a big night with a number of stars donning daring looks instead of the classic tuxedo. Colman Domingo of “Sing Sing” wore a custom Valentino suit with a red jacket that included a wrap tie and a contrasting black lapel. Jeremy Strong — a seasoned red carpet risk taker who was nominated for his role in “The Apprentice” — wore a Loro Piana sage green suit and singer Omar Apollo wore a Michele-era Valentino suit with a scarf tie and black veil. ???Yola Mzizi ??
