We talk about the disaster preparedness cycle as a?circle—but is it really? A lot of emergency management doctrine depicts preparedness as a smooth, continuous loop: assess, plan, train, exercise, repeat. But in practice, each phase is often treated as a separate project with a clear endpoint. The cycle often looks more like a square—rigid and full of hard 90-degree turns. Lessons get lost.?Gaps don’t get closed. And by the time we test plans in an exercise, it’s often too late to fix foundational issues. Instead, truly overlapping the work?that ensures every phase shapes the next and the continuous flow of learning comes through in the final plan. That should be the goal. First, we will host three Violence Prevention & Mitigation Symposiums for Corporate Security, Campus/Life Safety, Threat Risk Professionals, and related Stakeholders.? These one-day events have FREE registration! Our symposium goals are simple – to help institutions mitigate violence with thought leadership, analysis exploration, and best practice advancements. Our inaugural event is in New York City at the iconic Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts on Tuesday, May 20, 2025.? This event will focus on corporate security and threat risk management. The Keynote Speaker is Patrick Van Horne, Co-Author of Left of Bang. Our second event is in Denver, CO, on Thursday, September 11, 2025.?This event is co-hosted with Survivor’s Path and The Frank DeAngelis Center Foundation.? Final location TBD.? This event will focus on gun violence survivorship and institutional preparedness. THE RAK ACADEMY's 2025 Training Year kicked off this month with our second D-RAK Course at Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, NY. CONGRATS to the amazing DISPATCHERS that successfully completed this 2-day scenario-based course. Special Thanks to the Director of Campus Safety Jim Verdicchio, for spearheading this effort and for having the forward thinking to get all his Safety Officers through this course, since they all carry the responsibility of handling Dispatch Operations. Even though some attendees were traditional 911 Dispatchers, the majority were Dispatchers from a variety of NECUSA Campuses: Sarah Lawrence College/ New Rochelle PD/ Kingsborough Community College/ Skidmore College/ Mercy College/ Manhattan College/ Bank Street School We must remember that even though many of them might not receive direct 911 calls, they do receive direct emergency notifications through admin lines, safety apps and emergency alerts across campus. If an active killer incident occurs on campus, those Dispatchers will be crucial in Shaving Seconds to Save Lives! They and the rest of their Security Team must know how to work quickly and properly with responding Police Officers and their neighboring Dispatch Centers.
