Today is #IndigenousPeoplesDay, a day of reflection and celebration. For those of us in US #nonprofit and #philanthropy spaces, it can also be a time to consider the intersection of our work and?Native communities and causes. Consider these stats from Native Americans in Philanthropy and Candid (https://lnkd.in/erwKmBi): ? From 2002 to 2016, large US foundations gave, on average, 0.4% of total annual funding to Native American communities and causes ? 20% of large foundations give to Native communities and causes. Even among this specific group, most give only one or two grants. ? The majority of grant dollars are for program support (56%); only 15% goes to general operating support ?? Important takeaways for improving support include providing long-term general operating support to Native-led organizations, and pursuing Native-led solutions. Dive in deeper today. See reading suggestions below from First Nations Development Institute ?
At First Nations, every day is an opportunity to celebrate Native lifeways and the cultures and traditions that are with us always. Join us in recognizing Indigenous Peoples’ Day: Learn more about the Native origins of lands, attend an Indigenous Peoples’ Day celebration, or take a moment to reflect on the role Indigenous people play in our lives and throughout the world. Looking for somewhere to start? Check out our reading list: https://bit.ly/3YiHyqB To honor Indigenous Peoples’ Day, our offices are closed today, Monday, October 14.

??? Extreme #climate events have seen an alarming rise in India in recent years, impacting natural ecosystems and making #farming increasingly challenging, especially for India's more than 100 million marginal farmers.? The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's assessment suggests that without adaptation measures, yields of key crops could decline significantly, posing a threat to farmers’ livelihoods and to the nation’s food security. For Alliance magazine, Anant Bhagwati and Rishabh Tomar write on the urgent need to mobilize #adaptation finance through targeted investments from the philanthropic community.? Today is #WorldMentalHealthDay. Despite recent improvements in how our society approaches mental wellbeing, most people don’t have access to the high-quality, comprehensive care they need. From National Council for Mental Wellbeing: ?? 1 in 5 US adults experience mental illness each year, but only 47% of those in need received treatment in 2021 ?? 1 in 6 US youth have a mental health condition, but only half receive treatment Many donors we speak with are eager to get involved—but they often don’t know where to start. The silver lining? There are many opportunities for #philanthropy to contribute to needed solutions. Here we share seven strategies funders can use to help tackle America's #MentalHealth crisis:

??? In honor of an inspiring philanthropist and a visionary leader Ratan Tata's strong belief in ethics, equality, and his unwavering commitment to alleviating poverty profoundly impacted the lives of many communities in India and beyond. His dream was to end malnutrition in India and provide primary healthcare for all. With him at the helm, Tata Trusts contributed to several of India’s sustainable development goals, and role-modeled the power of giving strategically. Ratan Tata will forever be remembered as a bold philanthropist who keenly supported social innovations, collaborative initiatives, and the use of research and analytics to scale impact. He believed that a nonprofit "has as much responsibility for being professionally run as a corporate body" and invested in their organizational capabilities. Bridgespan is grateful to have worked with Mr Tata and the Tata Trusts towards advancing social impact in India. Our thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones during this difficult time—India mourns him and also celebrates his incredible legacy. ?????????? ???????? ?????? ???????????????? ???? ????????????????????’?? ???????????????????? ???????????? ???????????? ?? ?????? ?????????? ??????. ?????????? ?????? ???????????? ????????: https://bspan.org/485x1me?

Someone told us that there are politics going on these days. Well, if your #nonprofit or #foundation care about getting #policy wins, this episode of Let's Hear It is for you. Eric spoke with William Foster of the The Bridgespan Group and Marc Solomon of Civitas Public Affairs Group about their amazingly good paper: “Betting on the Tortoise: Policy Incrementalism and How Philanthropy’s Support Can Turn Small Sustained Steps into Big Impact,” co-written with Eric Chen and Zachary Slobig. The problem is that #philanthropy is astonishingly timid about funding policy work (sorry, philanthropy). The thing is, Marc and William remind us about how smart philanthropy can make a huge difference in the kinds of policy wins that every wants – freedom to marry, increasing the minimum wage, and many more. And then Kirk and Eric have what we humbly think is one of the funnier and more entertaining rants this season, so stick around for that. https://lnkd.in/gcrNDrin

In remembrance of Joel Fleishman, a friend and colleague who helped make Bridgespan what it is.
One of the giants of philanthropy passed away yesterday: Joel Fleishman. Our hearts are broken by the news of his passing, but we count ourselves so lucky to have been in the orbit of his mentorship, love, support, caring feedback—and to have been his friend—for the past 25 years. ? There would be no Bridgespan without Joel Fleishman. He believed in a concept on a piece of paper (and far too many PowerPoints) and in two people who were passionate about it (Thomas J. Tierney and me). He changed the trajectory of my life (and all of us at Bridgespan) by believing in us, making a major bet on Bridgespan as a leader of Atlantic Philanthropies, activating his extraordinary network to garner support for us, and pushing us to aim for greater impact every step of the way. Philanthropy at its best. Joel's love of life, ideas, Jewish faith, friends, wine, sparkling conversations over dinner, and all things Duke University, radiated in all he did until his final days. So many institutions that thrive today began with a story about meeting Joel. He was an extraordinary scholar, philanthropic leader, mentor, and dear friend.?He will be missed deeply.?May his memory be a blessing.
