We are sharing The Bridge Project's (TBP) op-ed advocating for an increased Child Tax Credit. With a strong record of success, TBP provides unconditional cash assistance to new mothers, offering financial relief and enabling them to invest in their child’s critical early years. Designed to be accessible, culturally responsive, and judgment-free, TBP meets the needs of mothers—particularly in Hartford, where 430 of the 1,500 babies born annually are born into poverty. This three-year support helps alleviate the toxic stress of poverty, break intergenerational cycles of trauma, and improve economic mobility for families in our region. It also serves as a bridge to universal care and education programs that begin at age three. After a year of organizing by our team at The Bridge Project, Governor Hochul announced in her State of the State today that New York will become the first state in the nation to adopt a pre- and post-natal direct cash program for low income mamas! ???? ???? The BABY (Birth Allowance for Beginning Year) Benefit will put hundreds of millions of dollars into the hands of tens of thousands of low-income families across the entire state in its first year thanks to leadership from Stephanie Silkowski and Emmy Liss, without whom none of this would have happened. We are on a mission to convince the nation simply just to trust moms, and I am so excited to welcome Governor Hochul into our crew. Trust moms to know what their family needs to thrive, and trust them to pass good policy, too! Last week we co-funded a day-long event, Unlocking Economic Opportunity, with The Connecticut Project and the Connecticut Council for Philanthropy. It was an exciting opportunity to bring State and philanthropic leaders to learn more about how direct cash intersect with public benefits and how we can build a stronger social safety net that supports families across Connecticut on their socio-economic journey. A huge thanks to all the partners involved (UpTogether, The Bridge Project, 4-CT, COMMUNITY ACTION AGENCY OF NEW HAVE N, INC., Yale New Haven Health, Yale School of Public Health). This work is evolving and continuing to grow, please expect more in the years to come.

Big Monday news! The Bridge Project is bringing our successful direct cash program to the Appalachian region, with applications opening in Kentucky, Ohio, and West Virginia this Wednesday, January 9th at 9am EST. We're excited to launch our program in Appalachia, where we'll provide 500 eligible, low-income pregnant individuals with unconditional cash for three years. As part of our expansion to the region, we're also launching a first-of-its-kind research study in partnership with Catherine Monk at Columbia University to better understand the impacts of direct cash on maternal and infant health, nutrition, housing security, and other areas. In 2024, we added nearly 1,000 new babies into our program and we are so thrilled to help each one celebrate their first holiday season! Whether they've used their Bridge bucks to access stable housing, better healthcare, warm clothes, or a few special gifts, we're proud to be part of each family's holiday story. Last week, we were honored to join New York City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams and Finance Chair Justin Brannan for a press conference celebrating the launch of a brand new initiative to provide unconditional cash support to low-income NYC moms living in unstable housing. It is the first time in NYC history that municipal funds have been utilized for a guaranteed income program and Bridge is thrilled to be its steward.
