It was great being at the UNJUST UK function. Centred around stop and search in times of covid.?We had a robust and informative conversation about policy and policing. There is a way forward for healthier community policing. UNJUST UK with Katrina Ffrench is a great step in the right direction when it comes to creating solutions. #covid #community #stopandsearch #covidー19

Why Policy Matters—And How You Can Shape It Policy isn’t just for politicians—it shapes every part of our lives, from the price of groceries to the quality of healthcare. Yet, many people feel disconnected from how decisions are made. The truth is, the most effective policies are shaped by those who experience their impact firsthand. Why Should You Care? 1. Policy Affects You Daily – From wages to public transport, every major issue is tied to policy decisions. 2. Decisions Are Made With or Without You – If you don’t engage, others will make choices that may not reflect your needs. 3. Your Voice Adds Value – Lived experiences provide insights that data alone cannot. Policymakers need real stories, not just statistics. How Can You Influence Policy? Stay Informed – Follow news, attend community meetings, and understand policy changes. Engage with Policymakers – Contact your MP, attend consultations, and voice concerns. Join Advocacy Groups – Collective action drives change. Use Public Consultations & Petitions – Formal feedback can shape policy before it’s finalised. Leverage Media & Digital Platforms – Share your story to influence public opinion and decision-makers. Be a Policy Influencer The biggest policy shifts—workers’ rights, civil rights, environmental reforms—started with ordinary people demanding change. Policy isn’t just about government; it’s about shaping the future we want. At The Black Policy Institute, we believe in empowering communities to take action. Your voice matters. Use it. #PolicyMatters #CivicEngagement #BeTheChange #BlackPolicy #CommunityAction #Leadership #PolicyInfluence

Seeing Beyond the Surface: How Perception Shapes Policy Decisions Not everything you see is what you think it is. The image above might appear to show a person meditating or praying in the middle of a stream. However, a closer look reveals only rocks, naturally positioned to create this illusion. This visual reminder highlights how easy it is to jump to conclusions based on limited information. In policy-making, similar misinterpretations can lead to flawed decisions, particularly when addressing complex social issues. Hasty conclusions can be dangerous. When policymakers act on surface-level observations without digging deeper, they risk implementing solutions that do not address the real problems. For example, if data shows low employment rates in a particular community, a quick fix might focus on job training programs. However, a thorough analysis might reveal barriers like discrimination, lack of childcare, or inadequate public transportation. Addressing these root causes requires critical thinking, evidence-based strategies, and input from those directly impacted. The Black Policy Institute champions informed decision-making by promoting thoughtful analysis and encouraging policymakers to avoid snap judgments. By taking the time to explore all angles of an issue, we can create policies that truly serve communities, build equity, and drive lasting change. Just like with the image, it is essential to pause, look closer, and ensure our decisions are grounded in reality. #PolicyMatters #Leadership #CriticalThinking #Equity #InformedDecisions #BlackPolicyInstitute

Celebrating Leadership and Vision at King's Africa Week This year's King's Africa Week was a powerful reminder of the impact of visionary leadership and the potential of collaboration between African scholars, leaders, and global partners. It was an honor to hear from Dr. Naledi Pandor, whose remarkable career is a testament to the transformative power of education, innovation, and public service. Dr. Pandor's journey, from her early days as an MP in 1994 to serving in pivotal roles across South Africa’s cabinet, exemplifies what it means to lead with purpose and resilience. Her contributions as Minister of Education, Science and Technology, Home Affairs, and Higher Education and Training have not only shaped South Africa's policy landscape but also inspired generations of leaders across the continent. The words of German Ambassador Walter Lindner resonate deeply: "Pandor is for us a symbol of the new South Africa: modern, innovative, dedicated to scientific progress and also outstanding female leadership." This sentiment captures the essence of Dr. Pandor's legacy—a blend of vision, action, and unwavering commitment to progress. King’s Africa Week, hosted by the African Leadership Centre and the Africa Research Group, provided a platform to reflect on stories like Dr. Pandor’s while fostering new dialogues and partnerships. It is through such events that we strengthen our collective resolve to find solutions, drive innovation, and create a future where African voices lead global change. Let us continue to celebrate and support the leaders and changemakers who remind us that with the right vision, anything is possible. #Leadership #AfricaWeek #Inspiration #Education #Innovation #VisionaryLeadership #AfricanExcellence #Collaboration #KingsCollegeLondon Dr. Alex Vines Director of Africa Programme, Chathom House #Chathomhouse H.E. Henrietta Lacks: The Modern-Day Second Eve and the Need for Fair Policies As Black History Month in America comes to a close, we honour Henrietta Lacks, a woman whose unknowing contribution to science has saved millions of lives. Often regarded as a “modern-day second Eve,” her cells—known as HeLa cells—have played a vital role in medical breakthroughs. However, her story also highlights the urgent need for policies that fairly protect individuals, particularly marginalised communities, from exploitation. The Lessons We Must Learn 1. The Right to Informed Consent Henrietta Lacks was never asked for permission when doctors took her cells at Johns Hopkins Hospital in 1951. Her case underscores the need for strong ethical guidelines ensuring that no medical research is conducted without full, informed consent. 2. Equity in Medical Advancements HeLa cells have led to breakthroughs in vaccines, cancer treatments, and infertility solutions. Yet, while pharmaceutical companies profited from these discoveries, Lacks’ family remained in poverty. This highlights the need for policies that ensure fair compensation for contributions to scientific research, particularly from vulnerable communities. 3. Addressing Racial Inequalities in Healthcare Lacks’ story is part of a long history of Black individuals being exploited in medical research. Stronger policies are needed to ensure racial justice in healthcare, including equal access to treatment, ethical research practices, and accountability for past injustices. Henrietta Lacks’ Legacy: A Gift to Humanity Henrietta’s cells live on in medical research, making her a part of every life saved through the advancements she unknowingly enabled. Whether it’s a vaccine that protects us, a cancer treatment that extends life, or fertility research that helps families grow, we have all inherited a piece of her legacy. Her contribution to science is a reminder that progress must be ethical, just, and inclusive. As we honour her memory, we must push for policies that ensure no one else is exploited in the name of progress. Justice for Henrietta Lacks means justice for all. #HenriettaLacks #MedicalEthics #HealthEquity #BlackHistory #FairPolicies #JusticeInScience #LegacyOfHealing
