Currently, she serves as our Clinical Director and she'll be the first person you'll meet if you apply for a psychologist position with us. As I prepare for a significant expansion of our team at The Black Girl Doctor this year, I asked our current team to share what they love most about the company. I may or may not have shed a tear after reading the responses. Entrepreneurship is wild, but the opportunity to create pathways to more freedom for psychologists through employment is truly special ?? . Amy R. Beck, PhD joined our team last year. Here is what she had to say ????. "As a mid-career professional, I have had outstanding success in other organizations, including breaking barriers and ceilings, but I have never been treated with the level of respect that I have received at BGD.?I am grateful for what those other organizations have put on my CV, but nothing compares to being treated like a whole person.?This includes the freedom to make my job work for me instead of the other way around, no micromanagement, and consideration for who I am and what I need. As 2024 comes to a close, I can’t help but reflect on the incredible year we’ve had together at The Black Girl Doctor. Here’s a quick snapshot of just some of the amazing highlights from this year. ???? We connected with tons of clients through therapy and wellness coaching (this is a given). ???? We showed up in workplaces and schools with transformative talks and wellness events (we stayed outside and caught a lot of flights). ???? We collaborated with fellow mental health providers and wellness influencers who are on the same mission as us (the event collabs were so much fun). ???? We nurtured our cohort of mentees through workshops, conferences, and personal relationships (the future looks bright! These future Black Girl Doctors gave us so much hope). ???? We spent time together as a team playing, laughing, celebrating, cheering each other on, and eating good food in person and virtually (#workhardplayhard). ???? We marched in a parade, hosted family outings, and organized our first-ever in-person retreat for Black women leaders (we love hard on each other and stay innovating??) . What I believe is so special about this team is that each of the talented doctors in our practice could absolutely lead their own independent practice—but we choose to build together. Each of us believes that the vision we share, the impact we make, and the possibilities we’re bringing to life are far greater as a collective. We’re ending the year on a high note, welcoming three new docs to our team (stay tuned for that announcement)! But we’re not stopping there—our vision for 2025 is BIG, and we’re looking for a few more psychologists to join us. The final event in our Fall 2024 Sowing Seeds Guest Mentorship Series at The Black Girl Doctor is here, and we're going out with an absolute powerhouse: Kensa Gunter, PsyD, CMPC, a trailblazer in sports psychology. Dr. Gunter is the Director of the NBA/WNBA Mind Health project, President-Elect of APA Division 47: The Society for Sport, Exercise, & Performance Psychology, and a licensed psychologist working at the powerful intersection of mental health, mental performance, sports, and culture. In this session, she’ll share: ?? What applied sports psychology really is ?? How to better understand athlete mental health ?? Her personal journey and lessons from this unique career path This is not a lecture or a formal workshop. This is a real-talk, open conversation—a chance to connect with a professional who’s blazing a path and is ready to answer your questions about building a meaningful career in sports psychology. When we first opened our mentorship program, The Village, we were deeply moved by the overwhelming response—over 100 Black women in psychology doctoral programs applied to join. While we couldn’t accept everyone, we knew we had to respond to the need. Our Sowing Seeds Guest Mentorship Series at The Black Girl Doctor continues this Wednesday, November 20th, and students are invited to join us for a special session featuring Kerrie Wilkins-Yel! Dr. Wilkins-Yel’s work sits at the powerful intersection of vocational psychology and social justice, earning her grant funding for research projects that drive equitable representation in STEM and education. As an academic powerhouse and passionate advocate, she’ll be sharing invaluable insights into: -Navigating the world of academic research, -Securing grant funding, -Publishing impactful work, and -Using research as a tool for systemic change. If you’re a student—whether undergrad or graduate—who’s interested in a psychology career that blends research and activism, this is your chance to learn from a true leader in the field.
