Have you ever been to the top of the Washington Monument? What a view! And what a significant marker of American history. First Ladies Elizabeth Hamilton, Dolley Madison, and Louisa Adams all helped raise money to build this monument, with construction beginning in 1848 and concluding after the Civil War. We recently toured the monument, learning about its rich history and literally gaining a new perspective on DC.? Did you know that this was the tallest building in the world when it was finished in 1884? It stands proudly at 555 feet, 5.125 inches tall. My grandfather, Leo Bernstein, was a generous visionary. In 1937, when he was only 22 years old and a young real estate developer, he recognized the inequalities in Washington, D.C.'s restrictive housing covenants. His successful effort to sell a home to a Black family (pictured here) in one of these neighborhoods led to changes in the law that eliminated such restrictions. He championed breaking the color barrier. As we carry forward his character and legacy through The Bernstein Family Foundation, I'm so proud to continue making bold decisions in his name - philanthropic investments that contribute to a strong civil society and provide opportunities for those who deserve them. #BlackHistoryMonth #washingtonDC

Reflecting on the life and legacy of our late president, I deeply respect what he did for this country and the world, not only while he was in office but what he accomplished since then. He embodied the enduring spirit of America through moral courage and uncompromising leadership. My grandfather had his own sphere of great influence, especially here in DC. He stood at the epicenter of life in Washington. Carrying his torch into the future as a philanthropist has been one of my life's greatest honors. I’m thrilled to help support Rahsaan Bernard of Building Bridges Across the River as he and his team work to create a literal bridge between communities, helping equalize access to amenities and resources between Wards 7 and 8. In honor of my cancer survival journey, my family adopted five public parks with Nature Sacred. The pictured bench is in the Wangari Gardens, a community garden and nonprofit. The Swahili inscription reads: "Haraka Haraka Haina Baraka" which translates to "haste has no blessing." This touchstone reminds me that life is a gift and I hope that it also brings continual hope to others. Wangari is a sacred place and I want this bench to be a place to reflect and find solace. The annual Ball on the Mall was, once again, an unbelieveable event! On behalf of the Bernstein Family Foundation, I am so proud to support the Trust for the National Mall, which is working with the National Park Service to restore and activate the National Mall as we approach the 250th anniversary of American Independence. We heard inspiring stories from the History, Heroes & Hope Award honorees, which included George C. Wolfe (filmaker), Elizabeth Alexander (cultural activist), and Dave Grohl (musician). It was all about sharing stories, celebrating our country, and holding a safe space for important conversations on America's Front Yard. There were no shortage of big thinkers and changemakers in attendance.
