Last week, TBF's Environmental Engagement Program project manager, Delores Chan, and coordinator, Claire Combredet, presented at the California Clean Boating Network. They shared insights from The Bay Foundation’s 2023 community-based social marketing pilot, a strategic behavior change campaign implemented to encourage proper sewage disposal amongst Los Angeles boaters to help improve water quality. Thank you California State Parks Division of Boating and Waterways for supporting this research and California’s Boating Clean and Green Program Vivian Matuk for hosting this event. Exciting news! This week, around 1,000 endangered juvenile white abalone from the University of California, Davis Bodega Marine Lab's White Abalone Captive Breeding Program arrived in Southern California, thanks to LightHawk's incredible support! We at The Bay Foundation will further grow these juvenile white abalone before releasing them to the ocean in 2025! A huge thank you to our amazing partners —this vital work wouldn’t be possible without you! Together, we’re helping to restore this endangered species. #savewhiteabalone #teamwhiteabalone #whiteabalonecaptivebreedingprogram #endangeredwhiteabalone

The Bay Foundation is thrilled to be part of the team collaborating on the Pacific Coast Ocean Restoration initiative??. Take a look to learn more! This project and its partnership increase the scale and impact of our long-standing efforts to recover the white abalone from extinction and enhance ecosystem integrity in southern California's coastal waters ?? #PCOR
The Pacific Coast Ocean Restoration Initiative (#PCOR) is an ambitious, partnership-driven initiative that will leverage the incredible work done to date, and the contributions from a diverse suite of partners, to advance a new model for coordinated and effective marine restoration and endangered species recovery that can deliver transformative impact for rocky reef ecosystems and coastal communities in this region, and also serve as a model for similar efforts elsewhere around the country and world. As Bryan DeAngelis, TNC's lead scientist on the PCOR grant, says to Bay Nature magazine, it will “transform the way ocean restoration is done in California”. This initiative is only possible through a diverse partnership with NOAA Fisheries, California Ocean Protection Council, California Department of Fish and Wildlife, Greater Farallones Association, The Bay Foundation, California Academy of Sciences, Aquarium of the Pacific, Sunflower Star Laboratory, Mendocino College, PAUA MARINE RESEARCH GROUP, LLC and UC Santa Barbara. ?? ?? In the Los Angeles area of Southern California, many beaches are subject to mechanized beach maintenance activities such as grooming, non-natural sediment filling, driving, and seasonal berm construction. This has resulted in reduced biodiversity and ecosystem functioning, altered morphology, dune removal, and reduced vegetation cover. ???? At Santa Monica Beach, The Bay Foundation cordoned off a 3 acre area and dispersed native seeds in the sand, including beach evening primrose, sea scale, and flowering sand verbena. As the plants grow, they capture windblown sand beneath their branches and leaves, over time creating natural sand dune barriers that?protect against coastal erosion. The dunes have already reached between 1 and 3 feet tall (30 to 90 cm). By reestablishing this habitat, The Bay Foundation and its partners are able to affordably create beaches that are naturally resistant to sea level rise, while creating refuge for endangered species and adding natural beauty to the beach. Earlier this month, an incredible TBF team of just 2 volunteer divers and 3 staff members cleared 500 square meters of purple urchin barren in a single day! Clearing these urchin barrens is crucial, as overgrazing by sea urchins transforms vibrant kelp forests into lifeless landscapes. The urchins remaining in these areas struggle to find food, leading to malnourished populations. The Bay Foundation’s Kelp Forest Restoration Project is dedicated to restoring these barren landscapes into diverse, resilient kelp forest ecosystems by reducing urchin density. A huge thank you to these amazing volunteers for helping us expand our capacity to restore these vital reefs!
