The Babbles

关于我们

Driven by the lack of developmentally appropriate screen media for children under the age of 2, we created The Babbles - a diverse group of animated babies that support early childhood development for the youngest learners. As parents, we are aware that: ?? Some of the most important brain pathways are formed between the ages of 0 to 2. ?? Despite global health guidelines, screen time is typically introduced before a child's first birthday and usually contains over-stimulating developmentally regressive content. ?? Caregivers are often deprived of the time and resources required to make informed decisions on the content they share with their children. ?? Sign Language, Social-Emotional Learning, Music, Culture, Diversity and Inclusion are important to introduce at a very early age. The Babbles addresses these core principles and mindfully embeds them into each short episode, striving to create a better alternative to the harmful regressive content that currently exists for children under 2. By focusing on key developmental milestones, each episode is designed with the intent to help children develop an understanding of vocalization, body language, sign language, and facial expressions, as well as promote important life skills such as social and emotional intelligence, cognitive development, and fine and early motor skills. Parents are encouraged to communicate with their child as the action unfolds, with the intent to strengthen the learning bond, activate the mirror neurons, and experience the root of the emotional arcs together. Our content is being developed in collaboration with 40+ year ECE and curriculum specialist, Brigitte Hix M.Ed.

? I’m thrilled to announce that I’ve been selected as a 2025 TEDx speaker ? Am I nervous? Absolutely! But this moment is bigger than me. When I became a father, I never imagined it would set me on a path that would challenge conventional thinking, spark urgent conversations, and lead me here. Over the past few years, I’ve immersed myself in research to unravel one of the most confusing, polarizing, and unavoidable topics in modern parenting… Screen time for children under 2. What started as a personal pursuit for answers became The Babbles, where my colleagues and I are developing research-based guidelines and solutions for the 90% of infants worldwide who engage with screens before their first birthday. But this was just the beginning. That work has since contributed to the launch of the Children's Media Research and Reform Lab (CMRRL) - a nonprofit dedicated to advancing this research, reforming industry norms, and driving systemic change in early childhood media. Being invited to speak at TEDx is more than an honor - it’s an opportunity to ignite dialogue, inspire action, and redefine what’s possible for the next generation. A huge thank you to the world-class team at TEDxBillings. They are truly the best at what they do. And to those who have supported me in this journey: Thank you! As your baby grows, they will interact with the same toys in different ways. If you’re a parent you’ve probably noticed that most toys are labeled with suggested ages. These recommendations are particularly important in terms of safety. Toys with small pieces can be choking hazards for young children, for example. But these suggestions can also relate to the developmental stage at which your child will be best prepared to use the toy “as intended.” And here I always advise a flexible mindset. Take stacking rings for example. They’re a great infant-toddler toy in that children can enjoy in different ways at different ages/stages. In their idealized use, the idea is that toddlers will discriminate by size, stacking the rings in order from largest to smallest. That’s a pretty sophisticated skill… and not where the toy’s youngest users are likely to begin. But that doesn’t necessarily mean the toy should be withheld for later. At the earliest stages, your baby may simply grasp the rings and explore them with their hands and mouths - which is a perfectly appropriate starting point. This sweet little guy, shared to IG by aren.sanjari - is in between these two extremes. With the help of his parents, he’s practicing his hand-eye coordination, stacking the rings in the order presented by his adult partner. (And working on his clapping to boot!) He’s not quite ready to sort the by size, but that doesn’t make the activity any less meaningful. It’s simply a matter of matching the task at hand to his developmental readiness. As you shop for toys, consider your choices carefully… assessing first for safety and then for how and whether they may lend themselves to different and increasingly sophisticated uses as your child grows. When you can identify multiple uses, you’ve generally found a winner! The trick is to think like Goldilocks - looking for toys that are neither far too simple for your child, nor far too sophisticated - but just right (allowing their meaningful use both now and for the foreseeable future). What types of toys have you found that meet these criteria?

Are you familiar with the "Sophie Giraffe?" If you are in #France, where nearly every child has one, or in Canada or the U.S, where they are given as baby shower gifts, you know about this cute giraffe--- and its ability to act as a teether, and as a comfort toy. As they are handcrafted, making no two Sophie's alike, with a gift box and story included, they do make excellent gifts. However, one ability of the giraffe, it's ability to "whistle" when squeaked, requires caution, as air is able to enter and exit this way. Combined with a baby's saliva, this will create mold inside Sophie, that builds up quite quickly. While the outside can be cleaned, the inside cannot... Teether toys are an excellent option for children to select for self-soothing, and babies will form attachments to early toys, especially ones that provide comfort. So do your best to find ones that don't whistle and, in doing so, save some money and avoid illnesses like oral thrush. A message from Executive Director Matthew Melmed: ? ZERO TO THREE is deeply concerned about the reported staff reductions within the Administration for Children and Families, particularly the significant impact on offices overseeing early childhood programs. We understand that dozens of staff in ACF's early childhood offices received termination notices yesterday in the Office of Child Care, Office of Early Childhood Development, Office of Head Start. These actions will have far-reaching and damaging consequences for early care and education in communities across the country. Babies can't wait for resources. Their needs are now. This is the foundation for a thriving future. ? The first three years of life are a period of unparalleled brain development. During this critical window, a baby's brain forms over one million new neural connections every second. These connections lay the foundation for future learning, behavior, and health. High-quality early childhood programs, like those administered and supported by ACF, play a vital role in nurturing this development by providing enriching environments and responsive relationships that promote cognitive, social, and emotional growth.? ? These firings are unnecessary and cruel and will leave families with even fewer resources during a time when they need them most. ZERO TO THREE urges the Administration to reconsider these staffing cuts and prioritize investments in programs and personnel that support the healthy development of our nation's youngest children. The future growth and prosperity of our society depends on it.? ? Read our full statement a: https://lnkd.in/gmt_x4EQ Tell Congress to stand up for our nation's babies: https://lnkd.in/g7Vy5p_2

The first 2 years are the most critical for the development of the human brain. Yet, it also happens to be the most educationally neglected period. Dan Wuori’s posts provide a fun way for parents to educate themselves on this critical period of human development.

How lucky is this little guy (age: 10 months) to have an entire collection of grownups hanging on his every move? It’s something we should aspire to for every child. Here’s why: The period from prenatal to age three is uniquely consequential. It’s during this time that the brain is “wired” in ways that will ultimately support - or hinder - children’s longterm success. And to a large extent, this metaphorical wiring results from nurturing, attentive interactions with the significant adults in children’s lives - which makes every one of us a potential contributor to children’s optimal development. Whether you’re a parent, a grandparent, a teacher, an aunt or uncle, a neighbor, a friend… your time is never wasted showing attention and kindness to the children in your lives. So give it freely and be a brain builder. ?? This little guy and his attentive grown ups were shared to IG by annica.

At the heart of children’s social and emotional development is self-awareness – a growing sense of who they are as individuals. Over the next several weeks I’ll be partnering with the UK’s The Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood to explore children’s social and emotional development in celebration of the Centre’s newest publication, The Shaping Us Framework (a link to which you can find below). For infants, knowing oneself – the first of six skill clusters identified in the Framework – is a skill developed from square one. Which is to say that, as newborns, we are not yet equipped with the self-awareness necessary to understand ourselves as independent beings. Indeed, it is not until 6-9 months of age that we begin to realize that we are separate from our caregivers. How we come to understand ourselves is, in part, a reflection on how we are responded to from our earliest moments. Speaking of reflections, did you know that it’s not until 15-18 months that infants recognize that the reflection in a mirror is actually them? Check out this lovely video example, shared to TT by talinfakhoorian, in which her son finds delight in interacting with the hilarious new “friend” he’s found in the mirror. As he grows, his sense of self will develop in important new ways. In the next post in this series, I’ll talk about the emergence of agency and the importance of allowing your toddler to make appropriate choices of their own. Here’s the link to the full framework: https://lnkd.in/ekKETdBG

Insightful research from The Gravely Group about the use of technology and screen time for differentiated instruction. "There are a lot of misconceptions about the harm that screen time causes young children. The truth is that all of those harmful benefits are only when technology is used excessively, replaces hands-on learning, or low-quality tools are selected without care. Research has consistently shown that high-quality educational technology has multiple learning benefits when used as part of a learning experience."

Song number three is my jam. ?? Watch closely as this little one, shown here at 10 months, not only shows a preference for one of three songs played by her toy, but uses the green button to advance past the other two to replay (and dance to) the tune of her choosing. She isn’t yet walking independently. Her expressive vocabulary remains limited, but there’s deep thinking happening here. Within just a second or two she is able to discriminate whether the song being played is the one she’s seeking. Impressive! And an important reminder that children hear and understand the world around them well before they are able to express themselves verbally at the same level. This little music fan was shared to IG by fatimaprocailo.
