Robin Heller, President of The Athena Advisors, writes:
Creating rules of engagement: That’s my challenge, and perhaps yours, as I watch the first month of the new U.S. president. I want to be active, not reactive. First and foremost, how do I engage with information, social media, quality journalism, and rumor? What are the ethics of commentary? Is LinkedIn a place where I should engage more or less???Not at all? And crucially, how do I protect my time for the work I am called to do in this world?
And as always, what is the best way to support our?clients?at The Athena Advisors Consulting?
Each one of our clients is involved in creating a better world. To be clear, I define a better world as exemplifying equality, compassion, justice, and peace for all, no exceptions. Our clients work in education, racial justice, peace and security, conflict resolution, journalism, transparency and accountability, or environmental sustainability. Most have missions that cover one or more of these issues. We are enormously proud to serve them by helping them have greater capacity to achieve their missions.
Now to LinkedIn: It is my favorite on-line place to see who’s doing what, promotions, articles, networking, or "I'll be at a conference and hope to see you there." On LinkedIn, I am tempted to “like” or “celebrate” or “support” when I read contributions that align with my political views. Seeing my world view supported scratches a particular itch and reduces the isolation that can go along with these times. I am indebted to those who post something that gives me language when I am speechless. But I am going to think twice before clicking on a post, or reposting. When I agree with someone, if I want to share that fact, I will reach out to that person personally.
Friends and Connections, I am easily found if you want to discuss anything about working together toward a better world (see above). Surely, now is the time for meaningfully convening, connecting, and collaborating.
Back to those Rules of Engagement: I am working quietly on creating my own private Rules of Engagement. I have three items to date. Comments welcome (DM if you wish).
My Rules of Engagement are:
·??????I will pay for quality journalism. Journalism, done well, gives us reliable information for decisionmaking and, through editorials and opinions, a context to shape our own views.??Journalism is priceless, but it is not free. Pay for it, as I do with the Financial Times, the Guardian, the New York Times, the Washington Post, the New Yorker, the Atlantic, and the BBC.
·??????I welcome and support those who need time out in another time zone. Living in the U.K., I’ve hosted people who want a few days to pause and see the U.S. from a different vantage point.
·??????Finally, I will keep doing my day job at The Athena Advisors. You’ll see me less on LinkedIn because I’m doing the work I am called to do with high-impact, amazing clients who deserve to thrive. May we be worthy of their trust.
