Reynold Hoover has a breadth of leadership experience—from the U.S. Military, to the federal government, and now the world of sports. As CEO of the LA28 Olympic & Paralympic Games, he's already started work on the planning and execution of the 2028 Games. We caught up with him at Aspen Digital's 9th annual Aspen Cyber Summit, where he spoke on a panel about the presence of cyber threats to sports organizations. At Aspen Ideas Climate in 2023, professor Susan Crawford spoke about the inaccuracy of FEMA's Flood Insurance Rate Maps, sharing that "six million additional houses should be in the floodplain than the FEMA maps reflect right now." Fast forward to last month's Hurricane Helene, which wrought catastrophic flooding in places like rural North Carolina and Tennessee—places that fall outside of high-risk zones designated by the federal government's flood maps. A month ago, we hosted the 2024 Aspen Cyber Summit. We're excited to announce that our 10th annual event will take place on November 18, 2025, once again in the nation's capital! What might be in store for next year? Get a sense by reliving the 2024 Summit with a new piece by our colleague at The Aspen Institute, Grace Bowie, and keep reading here for highlights: https://ow.ly/X0bC50TK0s6 One exciting moment was a session with Federal Trade Commission Chair Lina Khan, Federal Communications Commission Chair Jessica Rosenworcel, and Consumer Financial Protection Bureau Director Rohit Chopra. These principals shared the regulator’s perspective on government efforts to improve the state of cybersecurity for consumers, from data security requirements to antitrust enforcement. Khan shared that the FCC is focused on the next frontiers of how data can be harnessed, like surveillance systems that can now target consumers with a unique price based on what they know about each individual. Rohit added that the govenment must determine where to draw the lines when it comes to this type of personalized, surveillance-based pricing. Meanwhile, as brokers sell information such that a person could look up data on just about anyone in the US, Rosenworcel shared how the FCC used a 1996 law to prohibit this kind of behavior. One such remarkable leader is Maria, a UNICEF youth advocate from Barbados who is making waves in the fight against climate change. After witnessing the environmental impact of littering, Maria turned her concern into action by creating Little Thoughts on Big Matters, an award-winning short film about the importance of reducing, reusing, and recycling. ? Through her Thoughts Squad by Maria platform on YouTube and Instagram, Maria continues to inspire her peers to protect the planet and take charge of their futures. She’s a powerful reminder that girls are not just the leaders of tomorrow—they are leading change today. ? On September 24th, our Executive Director, Lola A., moderated a powerful panel in partnership with UNICEF during the UN General Assembly to discuss Driving an Inclusive Green Transition – Closing the Climate Girls’ Gap. The session highlighted the immense potential of women and girls in the green economy and the importance of education in bridging the skills gap. Elevating girls’ voices, like Maria, could unlock between $15-30 trillion in economic potential globally. ? According to UNICEF’s research, adolescent girls are optimistic about the future despite the hurdles they face. It is up to all of us to ensure that their leadership is amplified, and their dreams are realized. Together, we can invest in a greener, more equitable world by supporting young changemakers like Maria. ?
