The Arc Westchester mourns the loss of The Honorable Nita Lowey, former member of the U.S. House of Representatives from New York. Representative Lowey’s support of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) has left a lasting impact on countless children with disabilities and their families. Through IDEA, she helped ensure access to free and appropriate education for children, shaping policies that govern early intervention, special education, and related services for infants, toddlers, and children with disabilities. Beyond her political career, Representative Lowey was a cherished friend of The Arc Westchester and the people we support. Her advocacy was instrumental in advancing inclusion and civil rights for all people with disabilities, ensuring they could live full and meaningful lives within their communities. Her legacy will continue to inspire and guide us. Representative Lowey will be sorely missed, and our thoughts are with her family during this difficult time.
