Fighting childhood cancer through funding research and providing financial family assistance

关于我们

Non-profit organization on a mission to find a cure for childhood cancer, and in the meantime, help families in crisis and spread the B+ message. Our 3 objectives: 1. Provide financial assistance for families of children with cancer nationwide. The B+ Foundation is one of the largest providers of financial assistance to families of kids with cancer in the United States. 2. Sponsor research to find cures for childhood cancers and improve treatment options. The B+ Foundation has provided research grants to institutions such as St. Jude Children's Research Hospital (TN), Dana Farber Cancer Institute (MA), Seattle Children's Hospital (WA), Children's Oncology Group, and the Nemours Center for Childhood Cancer Research (DE). 3. Keep the “B+” (“Be Positive”) message alive through outreach efforts and talks. Share the lessons that Andrew taught us, including: have fun, set goals and try your best, show affection, and be comfortable with yourself. We need to “Live Like Andrew” by having faith in God, making time for our loved ones, keeping our lives in perspective, and appreciating our blessings. The Andrew McDonough B+ Foundation honors the memory of Andrew McDonough, a 14 year old athlete and ‘A’ student at Salesianum HS from Wilmington, Delaware. Andrew went from playing four soccer games on January 27, 2007 to cardiac arrest and a diagnosis of leukemia and sepsis just 48 hours later. Andrew’s blood type and the family’s motto was, and continues to be, “B+” …“Be Positive”. Andrew’s valiant journey was chronicled by local and national media and his website received over 1,000,000 hits in the first six months. Andrew went to Heaven on July 14, 2007.

Health-related effects from chemotherapy and radiation can reappear later in life once a child is free of cancer. Many people think that once a child rings the bell to signal the end of their cancer treatment that the fight is over. This is typically not the case. Many children live with side effects well into adulthood and beyond. #FactFriday #ChildhoodCancerFact #ChildhoodCancerAwarenessMonth #HOPEtember ??? Source: Coalition Against Childhood Cancer (CAC2)

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT ??? This month, we’re featuring former UDance Dance Marathon Athletics Chair, and 2023 University of Delaware graduate, Alli Trotto! Keep reading to learn more about her involvement and dedication to the fight against #ChildhoodCancer. ?? Q: What inspired you to get involved with UDance/B+? A: I was very close with B+ Hero Victoria during my time at Delaware. Victoria is the reason why I got so involved with The B+ Foundation and UDance in high school, college, and now post-graduation. Victoria passed away in summer 2021 and since her passing, I made it my goal to continue the fight that she no longer can fight. Victoria's saying was “let’s kill the cancer” and, as a UDance executive board, our goal was always to continue helping these amazing kids fight and hopefully one day “kill the cancer” so children will not have to go through this awful experience. The Andrew McDonough B+ Foundation has introduced me to some of the most amazing people and families and that is something that I am forever grateful for. Because of Victoria and my involvement in UDance, I am currently in graduate school to become an Occupational Therapist and specialize in Pediatric Oncology! ?? Q: What is the greatest lesson you learned from your involvement with B+? A: The greatest lesson I learned through my involvement with B+ is that no matter what happens, stay positive and don’t give up. I’ve seen all of the awful experiences our B+ Heroes have had to go through and no matter what happens, those kids are always some of the most positive people I know. Our B+ Heroes have become my inspiration in life and have taught me to never give up. ?? Q: Why have you continued to stay involved with B+ post-grad? A: Being on the UDance executive board during my senior year of college was one of the best experiences, and I honestly do not think I would have survived a senior year without those amazing people. I am staying involved with The B+ Foundation post-graduation because being involved has helped me keep in touch with those people and all of the amazing B+ Hero families. Seeing posts from the many families on social media of what our B+ Heroes are up to never fails to make me smile!

Over the weekend, members of our team hosted the annual UDance Dance Marathon Leadership Retreat at YMCA Camp Tockwogh! We had the best time connecting to our “whys,” learning from one another about leadership, sharing letters from past Executive Board members about their UDance experiences, throwing worries away in the bonfire, setting goals for the year, and most importantly, having FUN! ? Thank you for your continued partnership and support in the fight against childhood cancer, UDance! Let's make it an unforgettable year???

This September, in honor of all children bravely battling cancer, glassybaby is highlighting the stories of various B+ Hero families, and bringing awareness to Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. To date, glassybaby has supported 188 B+ Heroes and their families, and donated $231,152 to help combat the severe financial strain many families face after their child receives a cancer diagnosis. We're grateful for this partnership which provides tangible and long-term impact for families all across the country, and for their commitment to raise awareness and advocate for B+ Heroes and children with cancer everywhere.

In June 2023, B+ Hero Sophia went to her last day of kindergarten and was excited for summer break to start. Later that same day, Sophia ended up in the hospital with intense headaches, dizziness, and slurred speech. Tests were administered and the doctors found a mass on the left side of her brain. She was stabilized and flown to another hospital for surgery to remove the mass. The doctors diagnosed Sophia with a rare form of brain cancer, Astroblastoma. In the next 11 months following her diagnosis, she had seven MRI scans to ensure that the tumor didn’t return. Just before the 1st anniversary of Sophia’s diagnosis, her family received news that the tumor returned and needed to be surgically removed again. In May of 2024, she went in and had her second brain survey to remove the tumor. After surgery, her parents got a second opinion and were told that the tumor was not fully removed. B+ Hero Sophia then had a third surgery to fully remove the tumor, which was a success. “During this time, we were constantly worrying about being able to make ends meet – from traveling to and from doctors’ appointments, which are over 100 miles away from home, to the hospital stays for Sophia’s surgeries, and having to take time off of work to care for Sophia. The added financial weight put on our shoulders was generously lifted by the donors of The B+ Foundation by covering one month of mortgage for our family.” To help families like Sophia’s donate here: https://bit.ly/3X45f3u To hear more stories from families we've been able to assist because of your support, please subscribe to our email newsletter: https://bit.ly/3R9a8rC #CCAM #LiveLikeAndrew #HOPEtember
