Sixty years ago today, in response to racial discrimination and attacks on their constitutional right to vote, Martin Luther King Jr. and other civil rights demonstrators marched from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama, a five-day, 54-mile journey. Their persistence led to the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 later the same year. In 2025, we are still witnessing attacks on our voting rights reminiscent of Jim Crow. So today, will you join us in taking a stand against voter suppression and racial discrimination? We will remember and honor their legacies by continuing to fight for a fair and truly representative democracy. Voting rights are under attack across the country right now, but we have hope. Congress just reintroduced the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, a bill that would protect millions of voters. Especially now, we need federal voting rights laws like this to make sure ALL Americans can vote freely and fairly. The power should be in the hands of the people. Two days after the events of “Bloody Sunday,” approximately 2,500 protestors set off on a second march that became known as Turnaround Tuesday. A temporary restraining order prevented them from marching all the way from Selma to Montgomery, forcing them to turn around. While they did not go far in distance, their protest pushed President Johnson to send representatives to meet with voting rights leaders. These events shortly led to the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Let’s restore the full protections of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 by passing the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act- visit the link below to take action. ??:https://lnkd.in/eW64bBtp #TurnaroundTuesday #OnThisDay #VotingRights #VRA #VotingRightsHistory #AndrewGoodman #LiveTheLegacy #JohnLewis #MLK #Selma #Montgomery #BloodySunday #JohnLewisVRAA

Sixty years ago today, John Lewis (25 years old) led 600+ civil rights activists across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama, for racial justice and equal voting rights. They were met by state troopers and were brutally attacked. Footage of the violence collectively shocked the nation and galvanized the fight against racial injustice, which eventually led to the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. To expand this work, we must continue the momentum and remain vigilant. Fortunately, The John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act was introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives this week on 3/5/25. Sixty years later, we are continuing their fight and their legacies. And we won't stop until everyone has a vote and voice in our democracy. #AndrewGoodman #BloodySunday #JohnLewis #MLK #VotingRightsAct #FreedomToVote #VotingRights #YouthVote #Selma #Alabama #OnThisDay #OTD
