The case alleges these companies designed and marketed "ultra-processed foods" to be addictive to children, leading to chronic diseases like Type 2 Diabetes. With no scientific consensus on what constitutes "ultra-processed foods," plaintiffs’ lawyers created their own definition to fit their claims. Courts in St. Louis are known for their warm embrace of junk science evidence, but this year brought an influx of cases targeting makers of life-saving formula for premature infants. After a trial during which they were presented with junk science evidence, a St. Louis jury handed down a $500 million verdict against Abbott Laboratories this year, blaming the company’s product for a premature infant’s tragic health issues.
