The two projects transforming entrances at downtown San Francisco BART stations made significant progress in the first month of 2025. A newly rebuilt escalator at Civic Center Station connecting the platform to the concourse level opened on Friday, January 31st. Soon, work will begin to replace another platform at the station, the last of the four platform escalators to be completely rebuilt. Earlier in the month, a brand-new canopy opened at Embarcadero Station. The canopy protects the entrance on the north side of Market Street near Drumm Street. Work is already underway on a new canopy across Market Street near Main Street. BART is in the midst of a seven-year project to install 22 canopies above the four downtown San Francisco stations. The canopies protect new escalators being installed and improve the rider experience by providing an added layer of station security and cleanliness through motorized gates that allow the entrances to be locked at street level when stations are closed.

We recently joined our partners at VTA, BART, San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA), Caltrain, Transbay Joint Powers Authority, San Francisco Bay Ferry, and over a dozen Bay Area agencies to sign the Equity in Infrastructure Project (EIP) Pledge, expanding our commitment to growing the participation and capacity of underutilized businesses in delivering transportation infrastructure. Our Director Tilly Chang noted that increasing the role of historically underutilized businesses in our transportation programs is critical to fully realizing the community-wide benefits of investments funded by the Bipartisan Infrastructure bill and voter-approved local measures. In a move aimed at fostering inclusivity and economic empowerment, Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART), along with 17 other entities, signed on to the Equity in Infrastructure Project (EIP) Pledge in a ceremony held at the Milpitas Transit Center. BART's commitment, announced in?BART's official news release, places them in a voluntary coalition of 92 members, promising to elevate Historically Underutilized Businesses (HUBs) by enhancing their access to infrastructure contracting opportunities. Hosted by the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority, the signing event is a step toward economic resilience, leveraging the collective hundreds of billions of dollars controlled by these agencies to foster community prosperity. The pledge obliges signatories to streamline administrative processes, improve transparency, and increase the availability of financing for HUBs, among other commitments.
