“We are leaving all kinds of human capital behind, and I think the thing we don’t take responsibility for is that that is a choice.” Technology is advancing so quickly. “We are either going to provide individuals with the tools they need to navigate this society, or we’re going to have more surfs.” Also, “I never realized how easy it is to skew data…we need mathematical literacy…to not be swayed because someone puts a mathematical veil on things.” “Math will never tell you what to care about. Math gives you tools for thinking about what you care about (values).” “Until now we were like, ‘here’s the question, what’s the answer’…In algebra, you’re suddenly asked to do the reverse…the concept of what math is completely changes…this leap in abstraction. Algebraic functions are the prerequisite for ALL STEM fields…” “Mathematics is the gateway to our economic system.” “There is an obligation, and it is an ethical and moral obligation to create those pathways of access.” Thank you NATIONAL NUMERACY NETWORK for hosting. I learned so much and have so much to think about. Also, thank you The Algebra Project Inc. for the work you do! I know this documentary will affect my practice, and am so grateful for the opportunity to learn and the responsibility and privilege to educate. #math #numeracy #mathliteracy #digitalliteracy #algebra #hiset #ged #adulteducation #ai #stem #technology

Joy = young people, families, and educators sharing in experiential math learning activities. Math Literacy = the ability to read, write, and reason with the principal symbol systems of mathematics. With Dr Marnie Hazelton, Ed.D., and Englewood Public School District, in New Jersey
Mastering math literacy means students can use numbers effectively, understand patterns, and apply logical reasoning to solve everyday problems. In alignment with the EPSD mission, we are committed to ensuring that every student develops the skills needed to think critically and creatively, fostering a deep understanding of mathematical concepts that empower them to succeed both inside and outside the classroom.
