"Fake Guy, Real Laughs" - Colin Holbrook (PI), Alan R. Wagner (Co-PI), Photographer: Elena Zhukova, University of California, Merced Description: "Genuine laughs suggest genuine teaming. Here, our anthropomorphic humanoid absolutely destroys a group of research assistants with a perfectly executed joke (this is a real moment we luckily caught on camera). While developing such intuitive interpersonal rapport with machines can facilitate trust and team performance in many contexts, it can also set the stage for potential overtrust and error (e.g., unwillingness to abandon a robot perceived as a friend during a crisis). Our project is focused on understanding the role of anthropomorphism as a determinant of trust in and conformity with the guidance of artificial agents."

Exciting news from the UTRGV Center for Aerospace Research! ?? Our talented graduate research students—Eric B. Rodriguez Jr, Luis Alvarez, and Miguel Olvera—recently presented an update on their work: a novel, multiscale approach for passive flow control using Triangular Porous Texturing (TPT) elements. This innovative research aims to improve aerodynamic efficiency by harnessing passive flow control techniques, pushing the boundaries of what's possible in aerospace engineering. Proud to see our team advancing the science of fluid dynamics! Thank you, Dr. Gregg Abate for this award! We'd also like to acknowledge our FSU and UCLA partners (Dr. Rajan Kumar, Dr. Unni Nair, Dr. Sam Taira, and Jonathan Tran) #AerospaceResearch #PassiveFlowControl #UTRGV #FluidDynamics #GraduateResearch

?? What can moths teach us about building smarter systems? AFOSR-supported researchers from Duke University Pratt School of Engineering and Georgia Tech College of Engineering, including ECE graduate student Lt. Matthew LaRosa and Principal Investigator Professor Simon Sponberg, are uncovering how moths process information and make rapid decisions in complex environments. By combining machine learning with biology, their work inspires the next generation of advances in systems integration. ?? Why This Matters: Moths demonstrate seamless neural integration for decision-making. Insights could lead to improved drones, autonomous robots, and more robust systems. Nature’s intelligence offers a blueprint for designing tunable, adaptive technologies. "We want to understand how natural intelligence operates—how moths think and make decisions. Humans create impressive machines, but moths excel at connecting the systems," says Lt. LaRosa. Explore the applications and implications of this work: ??
