You might think your company is ready for #AI, but the truth is, only some are prepared. That's according to Cisco's 2024 AI Readiness Index. Of nearly 8,000 senior business leaders polled, 13% said they're "fully ready" for AI's potential. That's a 1% decrease from last year, so more executives are uncertain! And some believe there's a ticking clock when using #artificialintelligence: 85% think they have only 18 months to act before seeing their companies negatively impacted by inaction. Much of the #AI spotlight is on Meta, Google, Amazon, OpenAI, Anthropic, and others in "Big AI." But there's another one looking to make waves and has been studying artificial intelligence for over a decade: Ai2. Created by the late Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, AI2 wants to develop AI for the common good. It's arguably one of the most prolific AI research institutions, having published over 1,000 papers and has won many awards, minus a Turing Award, for its work. Ali Farhadi, a?University of Washington?professor and a long-time?#AI?researcher, is now leading that charge. An early employee, he helped build the firm's computer vision team, eventually developing technology that became a startup that Apple acquired. After a few years away, Farhadi returned for an opportunity he couldn't pass up: Taking control of AI2. Under his stewardship, the company's focus has narrowed, targeting areas where its work will have the most significant impact. One of them is promoting openness in AI. "AI is born and raised in the open," Farhadi tells me in an interview conducted at AI2's Seattle, Washington office. First, it was Microsoft's Recall. Then, it's Anthropic's Computer Use. And now, it's Google's Jarvis. More AI agents are being built to take over your computer. It's thanks to Large Action Models (LAMs), what Salesforce's Shelby Heinecke, PhD, once described as the next phase of artificial intelligence. But are these PC-controlling agents safe? The idea is that these bots will automate the everyday mundane tasks in our lives, freeing us up to pursue creative endeavors. Sounds great, right? Security experts aren't convinced...yet. This is for sure going to trigger Salesforce. Microsoft has announced it will launch its #AI agent builder in Copilot Studio next month--the service has been in private preview since May. In addition, ten off-the-shelf bots have been created for Dynamics 365. The news comes days before Salesforce releases its #Agentforce platform to the public. It's perhaps also Microsoft's first response since Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff publicly criticized its enterprise tech rival's Copilot efforts. At #Dreamforce, Benioff claimed that Microsoft Copilot failed to deliver the returns companies expected, even compared to the modern-day Clippy. Ouch. Fascinating: Perplexity is going to play in the same field as Atlassian, Dropbox and others with its move into being an internal search engine. "Perplexity is expanding search capabilities for individual and enterprise users of its paid Pro tier with a new feature called “Internal Knowledge Search,” which will let users unearth information from both the public web and their own internal corporate files or knowledge bases, the company exclusively shared with LinkedIn News." Salesforce has the platform to build the #AI agents. Now, workers need to be trained on how to use it. That's where Trailhead by Salesforce comes in. The company is making its AI course on its learning program *free* through 2025. This also includes certifications! This week's issue of The AI Economy explores this announcement in more detail and features an interview with?Jim Roth, Salesforce's president of customer success, about its meaning.
