Welcome to Chicago! Wednesday of this week, the Black CannaBusiness Conference & Expo convenes in Chicago. The Black CannaBusiness conference stage is laden with Illinois and Chicagoland's Black women and men who are the activists, implementers, opinion leaders and role models of the state's cannabis legalization and its social equity core. Of course, the lead and legendary legislator tied to Illinois' cannabis social equity legislation will be there to welcome guests to her city, as well: Illinois Senate Majority Leader Kimberly A. Lightford. On Thursday morning – opening day – Ambrose Jackson will escort The Honorable Senator to the Black CannaBusiness Conference General Assembly stage for a discussion about the social and restorative justice pathways the Honorable Senator wove into the state's cannabis law, and how non-profits, like The 1937 Foundation, delivers on those goals. Equity was written in as core to Illinois cannabis legalization; designed to make sure the communities harmed most by the war on drugs can participate. The law included provisions to use revenue from Illinois’ adult-use, recreational cannabis sales to fund a grant program to deliver support to Illinois' hardest hit communities. The Honorable Senate Leader Lightford was the Chief Senate Sponsor of the 2019 Cannabis Regulation and Tax Act. Ambrose Jackson, a dual CRTA-participant as Chairman and CEO of The 1937 Group, a vertically integrated cannabis company headquarter in Chicago, and Founder & CEO of this 501c3 non-profit, The 1937 Foundation. Please join Senator Lightford and our Founder as they explore lessons and leverage resulting from the four-year-old R3 grant initiative, which has been using a quarter of all Illinois cannabis tax revenue to support communities hurt by economic disinvestment, violence and the multi-generational and disproportionate damage caused by the war on drugs, and relying on 501c3 non-profit organizations, including The 1937 Foundation, to deliver it.
