Cancer in America reveals stark disparities, affecting groups differently based on race, ethnicity, geography, sexual orientation, gender identity, and income. Black women, for instance, are 40% more likely to die from breast cancer than white women. Minority groups also face challenges in accessing recommended treatments. Cancer patients from racial and ethnic minority groups are also less likely to receive recommended chemotherapy and molecularly targeted treatments. ? Kaiser Permanente, a member of the Together for Supportive Cancer Care coalition, was recently highlighted in Newsweek for their dedication to comprehensive care. Their Cancer Support Line connects patients with specialists who provide assistance with non-medical needs, including financial aid, transportation, and access to healthy food. As part of the coalition, they are actively working to expand equitable access to supportive care across the nation, and through initiatives like CancerX, Kaiser Permanente collaborates with stakeholders to drive innovation and enhance equity in cancer care. ? Upcoming Event! The National Academy for State Health Policy (NASHP) is holding a?webinar?August 5: "Hawaii’s First-in-the-Nation Medicaid State Plan Amendment for Community Palliative Care." For the first time, the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has approved?a Medicaid state plan amendment (SPA) to establish palliative care services provided in non-hospital settings as a Medicaid covered service. Community palliative care is specialized medical care for people living with a serious illness, focused on providing relief from the symptoms and stress of the illness, and provided in non-hospital and community settings across the continuum of care. By adding community palliative care as a preventive service in its Medicaid state plan, Hawaii is the first state to be able to comprehensively cover these palliative care services for its Medicaid beneficiaries.
